If you were given a grand cash And that is all you could spend, what optics would you put on your Remington 700 5R Chambered in 308?

Something used. Leupold. If used for longer ranges, Mk4 LR.

It will all depend on what you plan to use the rifle for.
If hunting then Leupold and I would suggest the VX3i 3.5X10X40 Non-AO Duplex reticle sighted in 2.75" high at 100 yards and then hold on the animal.
Leupolds are not pricy for this scope. You can get a new one for $399. There are also cheaper Leupold scopes.
If you are paper punching only then there are many scopes to choose from.

It will all depend on the use of the rifle. Do not forget to add the cost of the rings/bases

Start here with some knowledge first. Ila is quite experienced in this regard.
After that, make a decision and find it. As someone else has posted prior, you must have an excellent mounting system. No aluminum junk.

I should have clarified. I am looking for a scoop to get me out to 500 yards and as close as 100 yards.

I'd probably try a VX-3i LRP.

Maybe try to find a SHV 5-20x56 under a grand... might only take an optics planet code to get one to $1000.

I put a Vortex Viper HSLR 4-16X50 on my Remington 5R. The Viper HSLR and a quality set of rings with 20 MOA scope base can be had for less than a grand.

I'd buy a used Nightforce 12-42 and never look back.
