Default Grandson turkey hunt

My grandson will be ten this next spring turkey season and since my son in law has no interest in hunting I was thinking it would be a good time to expose him to the sport.
Brings up several questions for me, looking into the future and the fact that we live in CA. Can I purchase a shotgun for him? Can I transfer my shotgun(s) to him when I kick it?
If I do/can get him a shotgun, I'd be looking for a pump, light weight, 20 or 12ga. What would you look at these days?
Thanks,
jeff

I don't know how big your turkeys get out there, but seeing the ones wandering around PITTSBURGH (4 miles from downtown!), I'd definitely go 12 gauge.

Go with a synthetic stock, if you're worried about weight.

Get him in on the youth opener. My grandson took a 28# Tom that was amazing. I'd go with a semi auto to lessen recoil rather than a smaller gauge or lighter load in a pump. 20 ga will do fine, but ammo for 12 ga seems easier to find.

I guide on the youth hunts for the local NWTF. With the SST in #9 410 is a +45yrd killer so 20 all good with the SST #9 or mix shot HM.

I like the Benelli, mossberg is second.

And for your question about when you kick. Yes you can give him all your non AW reg guns. Grandfather to Grandson is a Ca approved family transfer.

Youth model in camo. Not sure if you can put a rail up top (think you can). Put on a cheap bushnell $50 red dot sight and find a good choke/ammo combo.
