I call my possum "Otis", but I haven't seen him in awhile.

Possums are not big ugly rats. They are hardly related. Possums do a great deal of good. Personally, I hate rats and will shoot everyone I see, but please leave possums alone. The only thing I see them doing is riling up the neighborhood dogs in the early A.M.

I didn't realize opossum were beneficial. 20 years ago when my chickens woke me up at 3am, I went outside to see what the racket was all about. The was a opossum in the hen house. I had no choice but the do him, her, ze in. I now feel shame as I hold my head down. Not what else I could have done.

I was uneducated about them. I remember watching a tv show decades ago about animal control. They got a call from a woman that said she had a monster in her kitchen. When the crew showed up, she pointed out the kitchen and said it's in there. The crew went in there and started looking. They opened cabinets looking for the monster. When they opened up an upper cabinet, not on ground level, this creature reared up and hissed something fierce. It scared the crap out of them and I thought that I never want to cross paths with that monster. I didn't know anything about them except that Granny made opossum pie out of them.

Now I know, please forgive me.

No. No. No.

Does anyone have a link for body armor for possums? It seems some people just have a thing against possums.

Seriously, possums are far more helpful to humans than harmful. OK, so they can scare you with hissing and making mean faces but that's because they got scared first, probably by a human. Slowly back away and leave it an avenue to escape.

Mine was "Art". He was hand tame. He lived in my back yard, in an enclosure I built for him. He slept there during the day.

He got "Advantage", as he had lots of fleas. Yes, he was tame to the point I could handle him once in a while, pet him anytime, and even learned his name, and at night, would come when called.

I really miss Art.

They are ugly- but they are great for the environment

Don’t leave dog food out and they will stay away
Possums are also immune to the Plague, and Rabies. Their body temperature is too low, to maintain viruses, and most bacteria. They eat everything from Vienna Sausages, to rats, and mice, to ticks, and snakes, including venomous ones. They are extremely beneficial to the environment, and make awesome, comical pets, and are pretty easy to tame. They only live but two years, double that if well cared for as a pet. They already have short lives, please let them live them. Completely harmless, disease free, animal.

I'm no animal activist. I'm no tree hugger. I dispatch rats, squirrels, and raccoons when necessary. But....because of all the things mentioned above the Opossums get a pass. I've got 4 or 5 on my property right now. I've had many of them on my property over the last 60 years. I think that's why I've never had a tick on me or any of my animals. I had one a few years ago that loved to be scratched behind the ears with a stick...he or she would come by on a regular schedule ... Opossums are cool....let them be.

I've had opossums square off with racoons in my yard, anthing that hates racoons is a friend of mine. I've lost way too many of my koi to racoons.

I would rather see almost any four legged creature on my property than many two legged ones...

My wife and I love the creatures God lets come around

I had 2 that were left for dead after their mother was hit by a car. Excellent creatures with outstanding personalities.

Opossums will forever have a golden ticket in my book. One of the most highly underrated and demonized marsupials IMHO.

They don't bother anything.
I usually just pick them up by the tail and drop them over my fence to my neighbors yard. Only reason I do that now is we have a cat that takes care of the mice and other critters. The possums bother the cat.

Possums eat bugs and mice. They eat roadkill, too.
At least don't waste the meat, and make some of Granny's 'Possum Pie.

A possum is a very beneficial creature. They don't cause the kind of havoc that raccoons do. They also eat a lot of pests in the yard. Why don't you just leave the possum alone?

Had one in my persimmon tree about a week ago. It wasn't even afraid of me. I shined my flashlight on it and it just looked at me and went back to eating. My first thought was to eradicate it but I was so impressed I just walked away.

Why would anyone want to hurt a Possum? They will take on a rattlesnake...did you know that? Save your hate for creatures with two legs.
Geeez...

Can't imagine getting rid of something that eats tons of ticks and doesn't carry disease. If you must, use enough force and proper placement. That means no bb guns. High end pellet gun assuming you have practiced at a very minimum or better yet, shotgun

Possums can and have cost me a lot of $$. They dig up my lawn looking for grubs. I trap them and take then far away. Skunks are different. I shoot them if trapped. There is no way to get a mad skunk out of a have-hart trap without getting sprayed.
