This is why I love C&R stuff because there is sometimes a story to go along with it if you can find it.

Thank you David, thank you Ruth, and thank you Mr. Orville A. Bierkle. This is an amazing story and it has kept me wattery eyed and up until 4:30am and was worth every second.

My grandfather, Elgie Bishop, also served in Korea and in my safe is his Iver Johnson snub nose that he carried in his pocket during the war. I am very proud to have his revolver and I think it's obvious the right man ended up with Mr. Orville A. Bierkle's S&W. Thank you all again and here's to all of our veterans and our servicemen who are on our soil and abroad keeping us safe and free.

I just found this thread and read it in its entirety. I'm speechless, but I'll say one thing, as I celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, I'll remember and honor Mr. Orville Bierkle along with all the other heros that made this country worth fighting for.

I too just found this thread and like everyone is speechless and teary eyed. When I visit with my father this weekend (paratrooper in the 509th, WWII, passed away in 1999) I'll have another veteran in my thoughts also. Great thread and responses from everyone...the respect is palpable.

Like others, I just recently came across this thread. I came in to work early today to get some things done, but first wanted to take a quick detour to Calguns. So now over 30 minutes later and running behind with my work, I can honestly say it was totally worth it. Thanks to all for the great thread and thanks to you Mr. Bierkle.

Memorial Weekend bump for an amazing story.

Everyone interested in history should read this. True history isn't what we read in textbooks, it's the stories told by the people who lived during those times.

In honor of the memory of Marine Sergeant Orville Bierkle and all who served, I bump this amazing thread today, the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War.
Thank you Sgt Bierkle, Ruth, and David for the thread.

Thanks Goober for the Korean War anniversary bump. I've been in the hospital since shortly after Memorial Day but am now home and should be 100% recovered next week. I've lots to post about the Sgt. and his revolver, but obviously haven't been in a position to do so. More as I'm able.

Wow. Amazing story. Equally amazing is how reading words on a screen can bring such emotion. Today will be a good day, if for nothing else but reading this thread.

Davidwhitewolf, I hope all is well with you. I don't believe you've posted in this thread since the hospital stay.

Threads like this one makes me happy to think there are still good happy endings!!! There are miracles happening when we aren't looking. Just think of the odds Ruth would be looking on the net for her daddy's info at the same time David was inquiring about him. WOW WOW WOW!!! The stories David can pass along to his kids/grandkids with this 1917.

Heck the stories I can pass along with this thread. Makes me proud to introduce Calguns to more people!!

Thank you to David and Ruth for a wonderful story!!! This is by far the best read I've had on Calguns.

Thanks to Black Majik posting on the "Best Thread on Calguns" thread or I would've miss this wonderful story!!

In honor of the Marine Corps 235th Birthday and daddy's proud service as a Marine, I'd like to thank all the Marines and other service members for their service to our country.

Daddy's proudest moment was the year he was the oldest Marine at his Marine Corp League Marine Birthday party. Being able to pass the cake to the youngest Marine present really meant a lot to him.

I'd also like to remember and honor the daddy who passed on his love of God and Country; classical music, history and reading. The daddy who made a small fishing pole for me and taught me to fish and whistle. The daddy who loved to laugh and love puns -- the more groan-worthy, the better.

I miss you, daddy. Semper Fi.

Ruth

This was a very cool read, caused my allergies to flare up a bit, and very amazing and a great read. I visited my great-uncle today; he drove Dragon Wagons, the first generation (M26 I believe) and worked on tank repair. He talked about Korea a lot and how it was the most bitter cold he'd ever experienced.

Here is the contact information for the National Firearms Museum.

Phillip Schreier
Senior Curator
National Firearms Museum
11250 Waples Mill Rd.
Fairfax, VA 22030
703-267-3913

Or:

Jim Supica
Director, Nation Firearms Museum
Same address as above

Phil is often on the TV. Tales of the Gun, Wild West Tech, The military Channel, NRA TV shows. He also attends many large shooting events, large gun shows, and is always a presence at the NRA National Meetings and Gun Show. I suspect he would be interested. This would make a great segment on NRA TV "I Have This Old Gun"

Jim Supica is one of the foremost authorities on S&W and operated Old Town Station, dealing in antique firearms.

Thanks, MDaly! I am attending SHOT Show in Vegas in a couple weeks and will call to see if either of those gentlemen will be attending. Hopefully we can meet up to discuss the Sergeant's revolver!

ETA: I do apologize for the lack of posting in the thread since I got out of the hospital; I'm in fine health, but have been swamped with work (a month in the hospital means a whole bunch of catching up to do). Won a very big settlement with the IRS earlier for one of my employers and am now trying to replicate that success for another; hopefully that will happen in the next few weeks and I'll be free to focus on setting up a memorial shadow-case for the Sergeant and his revolver, gathering all of the documentation (including sending off to S&W for a factory letter, I've been remiss in that), and ultimately meeting Ruth in person. Got some other plans, too, as I mentioned... and of course, talking with Messrs. Schreier and/or Supica will be a big step along those lines.
