Is in my bolt??? I picked up my 591 from my FFL today and while messing around with it went to drop the firing pin in the bolt. No go!! I take a flash light and look inside to see whats up. It looks like a damn metal chiclet wedged in down there. Do i break this out before assembly or did Surgeon let one slip from QC?

Best pic i could get since its so far in there

It's probably a piece of tumbling media.

Pull it out. It would be rather difficult to assemble with it in there..

Ceramic is pretty common.
There are different grits and sizes.
For larger parts, the media might be 2" long by 1/2" diameter pills.
The pills end up looking like metal because they are scratching metal off the parts being polished.

I just picked it out, it broke in to pieces. I think i was ceramic like you said.

Side question. I should probably have this thing Ionbonded before having the barrel put on right?

Ryan did, but personally, I would shoot the thing for a while and let all the sharp edges break-in natually.
Once you ion-bond it, it's not changing.

When I get my 591 in a few weeks, I'm just going to parkerize it and wear out a barrel with it.
When it's time to rebarrel, I'll send it off for ionbond.

Since my barrel isn't stainless and i've got to coat it with something i'll most likely do Cerakote and just do the action too then. When i get a better barrel i'll send in the action for Ionbonding then. Thanks

I don't think it would make a difference if you ionbonded it before or after breaking it in. Especially with the tolerances involved.

Ryan, what was the turn around on your action?

Also any signs of wear on the bolt yet?

IonBond doesn't to miracles. Parts will still wear (lugs and where the bolt handle hits the action when you lift).

I'm proud to say I was probably the 1st to IonBond a precision bolt action. And if i'm not.. the idea was still original relative to me With that said.. everything else stays smooth and flawless. X-acto blade will not damage it.. i tried!

Im not expecting miracles. My Tikka Tactical had what i believe was a teflon coated bolt that i kept a light coat of oil on at all times. Slick as snot and looked brand new even after about 2500 rounds cycled. I'd be thrilled if i could get similar results

Ionbond is just Melonite.
It's what's on a Glock's slide and barrel.

Machine tooling and cutter makers have been using it for decades.

Like 5 weeks. I need another 3k rounds cycled through it before I see how durable it is.

Cerakote is supposed to be better then Duracoat right?

The Duracoat on my Sako chips off like Krylon

yeah cerakote is solid ( much more than duracoat and krylon). I had Phantom Finishing do the job on my parts. great work .1 week turnaround. He is a member here.
