The three most important things to Rimfire accuracy are the barrel the barrel and the barrel.
Don't go cheap on the barrel get a Lilja.

I spent over $1000 customizing mine, all Kidd upgrades in a Boyd's stock. It's highly accurate and amazingly cool looking but I do feel like it was mostly a waste of money considering stock 10/22's are decently accurate.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably upgrade the trigger and barrel, get a good scope and spend the rest on stockpiling quality ammo.

My standard 10/22 upgrade list:
Kidd Single Stage trigger
Kidd bolt buffer
Kidd charging handle assembly with guide rod
Plus a UTG bug buster 3-9x32.
That puts you right at $300 and you have a serious squirrel slayer, plinker, and general bug out gun. One of my favorite guns to shoot.

as mentioned above, I'd rather an Anschutz or a CZ bolt to compete instead of a blinged out blow back auto..
congrats KB! your new-to-you 10/22 would be a great addition to any collection.

OP, consider an early 10/22 in original factory configuration. to find one with original box would be an enviable find.

thank you, it's sitting at my FFL doing it's time..

indeed boxes and paperwork are rare finds and values continue to rise..

I almost fell out of my chair when I found this one NIB

snagged it about an hour after opening.. and the NIB SPC was already gone..

Good Scope and mount and see what you can do. Then a Volquartson or some other drop in trigger. If you are going to try to get a competition target class giun then whip out the wallet and shop till you run out of money. No matter if bone stock or a $3000.00 custom the 10/22 is lots of fun.

Anyone had any experience with the budget barrels, i.e. Green Mountain, EABCO, KSA etc? Like under $150. Shoot, the Ruger target barrel is around 90 bones itself...

Why?

I'd send the trigger to Randy at CPC, put a different barrel on it, I have Feddersen and GM 16 in barrels. All three will shoot a one hole group at 50 yards with CCI SV ammo shooting prone with a bipod and bag. 2 MOA targets are too easy for my nephews under 50, and 3moa at 100 yards prone or off the bench, so I've got them shooting further unless it is positional.
