Default Handgun Choices

If you can buy it easily and have a choice, which one of the following would you buy and why? What is your experience with it?

1. CZ Shadow 2
2. Beretta 92X Performance
3. SIG P320X Legion
4. VP9 Match
5. Canik TP9SFX
6. Walther PDP OR

Maybe my daughter will buy one for me.

By the way, my wife likes a Kimber LW 1911 stainless steel 9mm pistol best.

Depends what is the use. Some of those a range guns, some better for competition, some for defense.

They are al nice pistols

Shadow 2, unless you already have a CGW SP01. In which case it’s prob too similar and not worth it.

S2. Looks good (most important quality). Heavy (1. but not as heavy as you would think with only 10 rounds in the blocked mag 2) soaks up recoil). The most accurate of the pistols listed. CZ’s race gun that closest serves double duty as a home defense piece with light rail.

There’s a reason why you listed it as #1 isn’t there?

My $0.02, get the s2 and p320 x5 legion. Choices 4 5 and 6 are polymer frame striker fired (will they really be any better than an on roster g34 with apex trigger…) and 92x performance is crazy hard to find and more costly than s2 when it comes up

Edit: If you are able to do intra family transfer via your daughter in a free state, get a case of s2 and p320 legion. You can try em out and will easily be able to sell if you don’t like them or get bored with them

So far, Shadow 2 has more vote? I recently bought a SP-01 which feels pretty good and shoots good.

SP01 is a damn nice gun. I had an SP01 (until my son claimed it), and I compete with an S2. The SP01 is a smaller frame, so it fits the hand better if you have small-to-medium hands. I had to put a Reach Reduction Kit in the S2 before it became truly wonderful to shoot. But the S2 is a beast size and weight wise. Great for competition, but if I needed something to also serve for self defense, I think I would prefer the SP01.

I have a CZ Shadow 2 and P320 X5. I like the P320 X5 better as it fits my hand better. It’s weird for I remember a Springfield P9 fit my hand like an Isotoner glove. Maybe I need to try new grips with the Shadow 2.

If I reside in a free state right now, I would get the Sig p320 X5 Legion for range toy and competition.

Shadow 2.

It takes the same mags as the SP01. Its just a little bit bigger, not sure what other poster was crying about how the S2 is so much bigger and heavier than the SP01. The SP01 is junk compared to the S2.

I had an SP01. Ditched it for a PPQ 5". Now I also have a Shadow 2. The SP01 isnt even comparable to a S2.

That solely depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you eventually want to sell it, the Shadow 2 or better TS2 are the winner. If you do USPSA Carry Optics, the same is true, but the gun is not legal in IDPA because it's too heavy. I have an X5 Legion for IDPA Carry Optics and it's a fine gun, but that primary purpose of that gun is competition. It's too heavy for anything else.

Looks like you picked mostly competition pistols. For range use, I'd go with a H&K Expert or Sig P227 instead. And then there are the 1911s and 2011s, which are true connoisseur guns. I can think of a few I'd like to own of those.

I have the S2O and it's very accurate. The front site is narrow so accurate aiming is easy.

One of my most recent duty guns is a P320 AXG Proffesional Series Full Size. From guns You mentioned, I would get the SIG P320. Excellent pistol. Plus You can by kits from Sig and change configuration as You please.

I agree that the 320 Legion would be the best choice especially for an oppressed CA resident. I own vanilla versions of the 92fs, P320, VP9 and PDP and I’ve handled a Canick. I bought the Beretta years ago and bought the others during my first year of freedom in 2021.

The PDP, VP9 and Canick have the best trigger breaks with the Canick having a slightly better feeling reset. The stock M17/320 trigger is good but utilitarian which is fine for a combat gun. No bad tendencies but not a target pistol.

With the 320 FCG, you can get every other chassis, slide, barrel on the market and not have to worry about the roster or FFL’s. Plus if you want to trick up the trigger, there are kits out there for that too.

Sig Legion or Shadow 2, depending on what you intend to use it for. You can't go wrong with the rest on the list either.

Canik is highly underrated on that list. It's a great service pistol that can fill multiple roles.

Sadly, that isn’t true outside of Sig’s marketing materials. For all the hype about the platform’s modularity, there is almost no real-world support from Sig on achieving this diversity. Just take a look at their online store to see how little is available.

The CZ Shadow 2 pistol is specifically built for competition. I believe you will enjoy taking it to the range every time. Have fun with it.

As an owner of both the Canik TP9SFX and the P320, I would vote P320 hands-down for the versatility. The TP9SFX is indeed underrating, but I don't find myself carrying a full size for any reason other than competitive plinking at the range.

I am not much into competitions anymorw. It was just for fun at the range.

What would you do to CZ75 SP01 be a better pistol without sending it to Cajun or CZ gunsmith

Sell it and get a Shadow 2. Seriously, you're way overthinking it.

You guys are too soft now . Here the true CGner replied: All of them .

BTW, I read somewhere: A maximum of 5 Out of States Transfer per year, a ten day and one per month rules also applied.

Get them ALL while you can.

Play with the grips. The SP01 is a great gun out of the box. It becomes a fantastic gun with trigger work, but that doesn't stop it from being a great gun without the work.

Changing the style of grips can have a big effect on the ergos of the gun. It comes with rubber grips that have palm swells built into them. My son did ok with them, but really liked it when we changed them out for thin aluminum grips. I agree that then thinner grips enhance the gun, but it's personal taste.

The nice thing about the SP01 is that it is probably the best 9mm pistol on the California roster. That means you pay $850 for an $850 gun. Not like the Shadow 2 or P320 where you have to go full retard and pay double or triple the regular price. It's important to never go full retard.

Well, it was good enough for me. I love 40 S&W but couldn’t find a complete P320 in that caliber so I found a caliber exchange kit in 40 and bought it online. The FCG swap was a piece of cake and worked perfectly. I later found a LGS that sold the Custom works FCG for $325. For me, having 2 complete guns was more convenient than swapping fcg’s so I bought it and now have P320’s in 9 and 40. With inventories going up, that store now has the FCG for $299.

I did see compact P320 kits available online and a complete exchange kit was priced around $350 which includes the frame, complete slide with barrel an a couple of magazines, everything except the FCG so it’s cheaper than a complete gun.

I have a feeling Sig is burning the midnight oil on their production lines trying to keep up with their military orders. That’s probably why they suspended production of their ASP20 air gun after spending so much R&D getting into the market and just introducing it.

My guess is that most P320 variants other than the mainline and high profile comp guns will be OOS only temporarily and return as they catch up with the DoD demands.

By the way, my wife likes a Kimber LW 1911 stainless steel 9mm pistol best.
I have access to all of these guns being an ex pat. I own a Shadow 2 and a Canik TP9 SF and have owned a P320X Legion.

By far, my favorite gun on your list is the CZ Shadow 2. Mine has made the trip to Mesa and has had CZ Custom do its magic on the trigger. With that improvement, it is comparable to the CZ Orange. (Actually the trigger on my CZC modified Shadow 2 is better than that of the CZ Orange (IMO), but the bushing on the Orange makes it a tad bit more accurate than the stock CZ S2.) I really don't have anything negative to say about the CZ Shadow 2.

I've handled, but never shot, the 92X Performance. For me the beavertail feels awkward. I'd recommend that you try before you buy.

I've owned a P320 Legion - which I recently traded to a friend. It's a good gun, but was not my cup of tea. I found I rarely shot it. I bought it as a competition gun, but never used it as such - because the Shadow 2 filled that niche.

I have a Canik TP9 SF. I know the TP9 SFX is better in all respects, but the regular TP9 SF is a great gun in its own right. I paid less than $300 for mine. If you prefer a striker fired gun over a hammer fired gun I'd recommend it. Otherwise, I'd recommend the Shadow 2.

I have no experience with the other two guns on your list.

Buy the cgw “pro kit”

Also, if you have ability to get those guns at free state prices, you really should get them all and try it and sell the ones that don’t work for you.

If you sell them for a small markup instead of 2x msrp you would be doing a great public service to the community also

I paid $675 for my SP-01, plus DROS and Tax. I have been many factory armorer schools, so I am familiar with the operstion system of many guns. I just don't have much experience with CZ pistols, although I completely disassembled a CZ75B before.

I just wonder what people do to their SP-01 for the better trigger. I may change the grip to thin aluminum one.

After my son stole my SP01 (and then asked me to do a trigger job on it), I ordered the "Pro-Package for 75 Manual Safety" (with race hammer and old style trigger options) from Cajun Gun Works. Did the installation myself. It does change the nature of the trigger pretty significantly, although as I said, the factory trigger is pretty decent to begin with.

I just wonder what people do to their SP-01 for the better trigger. I may change the grip to thin aluminum one.
I switched mine to SA and flat trigger, then did a CGW Pro package and 10x bushing

I have the brass Lok Grips on my SP-01 and the CZC aluminum on the P-01. You wont be wrong with both; but I prefer the brass grips on the former in competition.

Trigger? CGW kit...

If and when i can muster enough courage to spend $500 for a trigger job on $800 pistol, that’s the way I wanna do it. Almost everyone’s raving about it.
Question, why did you go with Pro package vs Standard (Defensive carry) for SAO, as CGW recommends?
