Default Small pistol primer .45 oh how i hate you

Last week i was convinced my lee pro 1000 was broken. I kept trying to prime 10 pieces of federal and blazer that wouldnt prime. Took my whole press apart, cleaned and lubed and still had problems until i put in a piece of fiocchi brass and it primed. Not so bright look on my face. Facepalm. Look at brass. Remember im an idiot and measure the primer pockets finding they are smaller than usual. Put more brass in load as usual.
The issue, other than my stupidity is, i guess it was range pickup since i didnt buy federal or blazer lately so why is there such an animal? SPP? Really. Is it so reloaders can hate their lives? I mean whats the point?( kind of like this post) why has federal gone to the spp .45?

Small primer pockets when it's supposed to be a large primer sucks. Especially when you are humming along hand priming, then BAM, everything comes to a screeching halt!

For the most part the SPP in 45 Auto started as a "greener" non-lead primer option. I think most are still in that category, but some are just SPP. No doubt the SPP put out less "stuff" that is bad for you, plus they likely cost a little less when you are buying bazillons, like Federal et al. Just sort them before tumbling.

I load them when changing from a SPP caliber like 9mm or 40S&W, saves having to switch the primer setup. When I run out of SPP cases, I then change over to the LPP and finish my restocking of 45 Auto.

Every time I load 45acp I consider starting a thread just like this one.

I curse at em, and set em aside to get loaded some day..

Im sorting a .50 cal can of brass right now and ive found 25 so far of the insidious little bastards. Once i get through with the can i would be more than willing to trade for real LPP .45 brass if anyone wants it.

I hand sorted my 45 and still had 3 get through.

I've got 200 spp in a bag compared to the 700 lpp.

OTOH, I hand primer pocket clean and install primer so I caught those three before I ruined a primer (Newbie paranoid loader)

I actually prefer the SPP 45s. Lets time for me wasted on switching primer systems.

I load 9, 357, and 40. All SPP. Now, I can load 9, 357, 40, and 45.

Besides, I hand sort my Brass and part of the inspection is looking at the bottom to make sure there is not cracks or expansion or pressure marks.

I have not had one go through yet. I am not trying to get 9000 rounds an hour, I just like to go slow and take my time.

However, right now with the pain in the *** of getting SPP and LPP seems to be easier to find, I am loading more LPP.

I set them aside till I get a few hundred then load them up. I use them when I go shooting somewhere I can't pick up my brass. I don't cair if I leave SPP 45 behind.

That's all I load. Easier that way so I don't have to switch my lnl ap over to lpp. Send em on over to me and I'll take em off you hands. Drop me a pm if interested.

I heard your supposed to reload and shoot SPP .45 ACP brass at IDPA competitions, especially if they are no brass sweeping events. I personally would never do such a thing..

Anyone have small pistol primers?

I sort mine out too but I've been keeping the spp .45 because there might be a need for me to load SPP because that might be all I have left.

However, anyone want over 200 pieces of .40 brass and a couple handful of 10mm brass????? I don't shoot either but I pick them up when I sweep the floor on the range.

I use them for "give-aways". My friends aren't going to care, and if I don't get them back, no biggie...

wait till you are humming along on a dillion 650 and a small one gets in there and you think its a tight primer pocket and give the handle a little more push.

Then KABOOM primer stack blown up I do not learn I guess this I did x2
