Driving through NV Question
NV is very gun friendly and I know I can simply "unconceal" my handgun traversing the state from CA. If I have to leave the gun in the car I'll put it in a lock box, but is that the law in NV or is simply locking the loaded gun (out of sight) sufficient in that state?

NV is very gun friendly. Carrying a loaded gun in the car is okay. To carry on your person in a car you need a CCW. I always keep a loaded gun in the center console when I travel there. As soon as I cross the state line I pull over, grab the gun, chamber a round and keep it in the glove compartment. |

I've visited several websites and they covered every situation (including above) except stating explicit the law regarding a loaded firearm left unattended in a vehicle. I suspect as long as out of sight your good, but it's easy living in CA to be paranoid. I'm 5 weeks from moving at to ID at which point I won't give a rip about CA and the enhanced carry in ID is good in NV.

I use this site when I'm traveling. Of course you still want to go to the states website and verify info....
http://www.handgunlaw.us Here's the page for Nevada; Nevada Look at page 6.

If it's been said once it's been said a thousand times, for like $150 total or less get an AZ/NV/UT/FL non resident CCW. If you travel it only makes sense. It doesn't "fix" everything, but there is no downside to owning one and it eases the rules in about 2/3 of the states.

A. Open carry. B. Place your loaded handgun in your vehicle's glove/utility compartment or in the locked container attached to the vehicle. NV conceal carry laws prohibits any type of conceal carry of a handgun without having a valid carry permit. ^This includes a property owner being on their own property and a person being in their own residence. NV case laws indicate that... 1. Firearm in a portable container on or near the body is considered conceal carry. 2. Unloaded and in a locked container is an exemption to NV conceal carry laws due to this method complying with Federal laws for transporting firearms. ^Loaded and in a locked portable container on or near the body would not be exempt from NV conceal carry laws because that does not meet the Federal requirements for transporting firearms. If you freqent NV, obtain an AZ CCW permit or a NV non-resident CCW permit. |

This is difficult to understand. Loaded and placed in an easily accessible glove box is OK.
Loaded and placed in an easily accessible locked box is a no-no? Glad I am getting my AZ CCW. |

Loaded or unloaded in a locked box attached to the vehicle is good-to-go. Unloaded in a locked box that is not attached to the vehicle is good-to-go. Loaded in a locked box that is not attached to the vehicle is no-go.

NV case laws determined that a firearm in a portable container on or near the body is considered conceal carry. Portable container being a bag, pack, purse, case, or similar container that can be carried by a person. A locked box that can be carried by a person meets what is a portable container. Which means per NV case laws, a handgun in a locked box that can be carried by a person requires a valid carry permit. The NV AG Office further clarified this by determining that, since Federal laws [18 USC 926A] allows for the legal transportation of an unloaded firearm in a locked container, an unloaded handgun in a locked container would be an exempt condition from NV conceal carry laws. Which means... Unloaded handgun in portable locked container = NV legal due to Federal laws. Loaded handgun in portable container = NV illegal conceal carry, unless the possessor has a valid carry permit. |

The NV legislature changed the laws regarding Vegas and Clark County a few years ago. They are now in line with the rest of the state. Some casinos may have their own policy regarding firearms, especially if you plan to OC. Use good judgement. Otherwise, Vegas still has to comply with state law.
OC is legal on the strip. You may get some attention, but if that's about it if you are doing nothing illegal/wrong. That being said, can does not always equal should.

States, Oregon for example, do appear to allow transportation of loaded handguns when properly secured and the excellent explanation of NV law appears to allow transport of a loaded handgun in a locked container that is not portable. Glove , box and center console would appear, if locked, to satisfy ths requirement Probably wasn't worth asking since I'm moving to Idaho and an Enhanced CCW works for OR and NV. I'll be giving up my ability to carry in CA, but I won't be coming back here much. |
