I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling. I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest. |

Labeling Procedures
For me a tapewriter works best (e.g. Brother P-touch, etc.)
1. I can read it which beats my handwriting 2. I can use bar codes which opens up a whole new world vis-a-vis spreadsheets, cataloging, keeping track of quantities, etc. 3. Another option is label printing software which can do the same thing without the need of buying a tapewriter. |

I leave the ammo in the cardboard case lot it came in. It has labels already on it from the factory. For inventory I count the number of cases and then the number of boxes left in the open case on top of the stack.
The best thing about leaving ammo in the case lot it came in is that when the case is empty I can throw it away. Then, I don't need to store an empty ammo can that takes up exactly the same space wether it full or empty.

The best thing I found over the years is blue tape and a sharpie.

That's always convenient... I got a few where Federal or PMP sent the ammo in a .50 can which is nice. Still stuck a label on them though.

I use the P-touch Editor software - included with the printers.

Ditto. I just write a number on it. Then I have a spreadsheet telling me what's in that box number. I can surf my spreadsheet to tell me what ammo I have and how much. I probably have half my ammo catalogued so far.

Quick update, with more long-term data.
some of the labels are unshakable, others curled up and fell off. It seems to occur in batches, so there must be some magic combination of glue/water/paper that works better than other mixtures. My last few have been done with sharpie and duct tape. :-)

One more update:
almost 0 labels survived the move to Arizona intact. The moving boxes were full of floating paper labels. Ah well, sharpies and duct tape it is, I guess...

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. If you really like those size/style labels consider using 3M adhesive spray, although it can be messy. Or print directly onto larger size Avery mailing labels. I think they make half sheet size ones in addition to smaller options.

You hoarders. Think of all the poor Biden supporting first time gun owners that can't find or afford a few boxes for their new XD to protect them from the civil war and millions of crazy Trumpers. You guys complaining about your mountain of .50 cal cans getting disorganized. Why don't you just swim in a pile of cartridges like Scrooge McDuck?
