Default Thoughts on Sig P220 10mm

Hello everyone,

I'm getting a bug to buy a Sig P220 in10mm. I've held the .45-caliber version of the P220, and it feels great in my hand. Since I already have a Sig P229 in .40-cal, I feel I already have a "practical" pistol that uses readily-available, cheap ammo and meets my needs for personal defense. That said, I think I'm willing to take the hit on the relative cost and inconvenience of getting 10mm ammunition.

I've wavered back and forth between buying a .45 and a 10mm. My main interest in the 10mm is the fact that it's a great cartridge that one doesn't see very often. I'm curious what people's thoughts are on the P220 and the 10mm. I'm especially interested if anyone bought the .45 or 10mm and wishes he bought the other caliber.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best,
Doug

Sounds like you’ve already made your decision. If you can feed the beast, I say go for it.

I'm also interested in a P220 chambered in 10mm. Though i'm pretty sure 10mm is off roster. Is your plan to buy/PPT an off-roster 10mm P220, or swap a 10mm barrel/slide to an on-roster P220?

Serious, it's off-roster? I feared that.... If that's the case,
I guess my decision will be an easy one.... :-(

Yep, I didn't see it on the roster. https://www.oag.ca.gov/firearms/certguns In fact, the only 10-mils on the roster were the Glock 20 and 29 and a couple Kimbers. No Glock 40. My choices shall be limited....

An aluminum framed 10mm? I guess their engineers tested it for durability? I'm surprised it isn't a steel frame not only for strength but also shootability with full tilt 10mm loads.

The amount of different pistols being produced a Sig today who knows. Bruce Grey did a group conversion years ago. You would have to search Sig Talk.

The Sig P220 Elite in 10mm are nicely fitted guns.

If you aren’t exempt, a 10mm Sig will cost you many pints of selling your blood on the black market to purchase it. You could buy both a P220 in .45, and either a G20 or G29 in 10mm for much less and enjoy both calibers. (You can do some barrel/slide swapping with certain Glocks, but I’m not a big fan of that route). 10mm is a fun cartridge because you can go from mild to wild as you wish. Or, you can find a G40 for around $1200 or so on here, put an RMR and co-witnessed sights on it, and really have some fun. Good luck!

My thoughts are that if I could go down to the store and buy one for MSRP, I'd do it right now.

Affordable, easily available ammo is the problem.
And ... why 10mm? - unless you're a collector.

The 220 10mm is what Bruce always wanted the conversion to be, after it was released he stopped converting.

Sig 10mm all have steel frames (and his conversion required it to).

I'd buy one today if I could.

I checked SIG's website and it said the Legion P220 is 30.4 ounces and frame material alloy. It seems too light for a steel frame. I used to have a P220ST and it seemed at least as heavy as a 5" 1911 or slightly heavier.

I thought about sending my 220st in. But I have a Delta that shoots wonderfully.

Sig Hunter is 10mm, SAO with stainless frame and slide. It has the kryptek camo finish, I like it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I’m also trying to find a P220 in 10mm; don’t care which model. They are definitely off-roster so you have to find one for sale (Who knows how they got it unless they’re LEO). I have three 10’s; the Kimber Eclipse, and two 1911’s built by Ed Serva. I really want the Sig too.

If you're in the LA area, I have a P220 in 10mm that you can try yourself and shoot with. I like the P220 frame and i have shot it in 45, but the 220 in 10mm makes sense, like the Glock 20/21 frames , it's the only obvious frame that can support such a powerful round.

10mm ammo prices aren't so much an issue when you load your own. Factory ammo... pricey. Homemade... not bad at all.

Default Thoughts on Sig P220 10mm

I'm a big Sig fan and also a big 10mm fan.

I also have a few Sig P220s in .45 and am a fan of those also.

All that said, I'd just skip the high cost and headache of getting a 10mm Sig P220 in CA and just get the G20. I have the G20 and it is superb. That polymer really tames the 10mm and with a 6 inch Lone Wolf barrel, it is wickedly accurate.

Also, my Sig P220s with the alloy frames have quite a bit of felt recoil as compared to my Glock 21 which is .also .45 acp and uses the same frame as the G20.

If the Sig P220 in 10mm also uses the alloy frame which certainly sounds like it, be prepared for a healthy amount of felt recoil. I also own a P220 ST in .45 and the recoil is better but still not as good as the G21.

The G20 will have a much better feel in the recoil dept. It's rugged, accurate, 4 times cheaper than the Sig and it's on the roster. Just some things to consider. Also, I'd recommend the G20 SF model over the G20. You can thank me later

Me personally, I'd get the P220 in 45 and the G20 SF also. It'll still be cheaper than a P220 in 10mm in CA

The Sig P220 Match Elite is steel frame gun.
Also uses a different locking block than the 45 caliber.
It will accept and fire the 22 conversion kit without modification though

I bought the 10 MM then also a 45 conversion kit. Another $45 for a P220 45 ACP locking block. Now I have a pistol that fires three calibers.

Bruce Gray had trouble getting the aluminum frame to work well with the 10 MM caliber.

Oh. If the frame is steel and you can shoot all three calibers, then it becomes way more interesting for sure.

One of these maybe? There are only about 30 of them. It isn't for sale.

I've never been a sig fan. The only Sigs I would get would be their 1911s. And, of the P series, the 220 or 226 but they must be Stainless (frame and slide) and Elite (with beaver tail grip).
About 10mm, umm, I never wanted a 10mm or any odd calibers anyways. Yes, IMHO 10 mm is about as odd as 327 or 41 magnums which were solutions to non existing problems.

That said, get one if it pleases you and you want one. We are talking WANT here, not NEED.
Let us know how it worked at the range.

Because suppressing it isn’t a goal, go for 10mm. If it were me I’d get a Glock 20 and a Sig 220 45 instead of buying an off roster Sig 10mm. Or get the rostered Kimber 10mm for the nice SAO trigger.
