Default Another old sword question

This was my brothers but I don't have any info on it, I suspect South east Asia maybe in or around Veitnam. Blade while sharp has fine coat of rust.

Look up Thai Dhaab sword, see if that matches.
(Used in Krabi Krabong.)

Rub the rust with the edge of a nickel coin. It will take the rust off and not disturb the metal or remaining finish.

Yes copper penny, make sure it is a older one with real copper.

Actually the penny and a little 3 in 1 oil works great. DO NOT use a wire brush at all, ever.

The Krabi Krabong blades aren't finished for a cosmetic shine, like Western blades, that's not what you'll find, it will be fairly raw metal, which is why it has corroded so badly.

Use copper wool or bronze wool. It is softer than the steel and won't scratch it. Wire brush is likely to scratch. Amazon, $5 for three, free delivery with Prime: https://www.amazon.com/HOMAX-PRODUCT...971098&sr=8-24

I would start with a rag. A rag and some gun oil and some rubbing will get rid of a lot of surface rust. You will be surprised with the results.

What do you think of using plain white vinegar with either scotch rite or the copper wool to remove the rust.
