Default .308 Garand conversion?

I have a DCM mixmaster Garand (SA action original barrel, HR trigger group) in decent shape. Lately I've been thinking of trying to find someone that is known to do good work to convert it to .308, primarily for ammunition availability. Any good ideas?

I have a match grade built (Fulton .30-06) I got from a friend years ago. It just seems like a nice .308 Garand would be cool.

Thanks in advance!

All you need to do is put a 308 barrel on it.
Tim Shufflin does good work and has a quick turn around.

Shuff definitely does great work. But I don't quite get "ammo availability" as a reason - the CMP has surplus .30-06 for 55 cents round/delivered. Can you get .308 for less than that right now?

+1. I would wait until surplus dries up. Save your brass and reload.

I also buy the theory that .308 "should be" more available as that caliber remains in active production for military buyers.

But having said that, a couple of hard facts are staring me in the face: (1) 30-06 is what's available cheap from CMP, and (2) 30-06 is about the only rifle caliber I consistently see on shelves during the current panic.

Yeah right now .308 is harder to find and more expensive.

I imagine it helps that .30-06 is no longer a tactical caliber, and that's all people seem really interested in at the moment (i.e. panicing about). Not to mention that .30-06 is one of the most popular hunting rounds in the U.S.

I have a LOT of once fired 7.62X51 brass.

I'm not currently set up with CMP, although I understand it's not a huge deal to do so.

I have the Fulton match M1 (might sell). I also have a couple of M1A's, which I might sell. I've been trying to think long term - I like the Garand platform. I think .308 will be easier to get long term. I know at least some if not most of the .30-06 hunting ammunition isn't really set up for the Garand.

Thanks for your thoughts

true. I don't believe I've ever run factory through mine. I've pretty much always reloaded for it since I got my bolt '06 before I got the garand. I've found that toning down the rounds is actually more accurate. If I recall, 46-48grains IMR 4895 and a 150 were pretty much magic out of it.

unless there was a reason to go 308, like you have a bolt rifle to match, or an AR to match, I'd keep it '06. but that's me. I'm kinda that way

Note that the change may make the rifle no longer qualify as a C&R.

There is some interpretation about 'original configuration' if YOU change the caliber.

That said, I had Dean twist on a 308 barrel to one of the old CMP Grade A receivers, coupled that with an Orion 7 parts kit purchased back in the day and I essentially had a brand new 308 M1 that was a dream to shoot.

Good luck with the project.

It still remains 30 Caliber so the "caliber" doesn't change. 7.62/308 was a "military configuration" for the Garand used by the Navy and the Italians. Plus, several Garand rebuilders offer their Garands in either 308 or 30-06 to C&R holders.
