My '92 Winchester .44-40 has a lot of special features. Someone got me a free "record check" (not a factory letter). The frame serial number says the gun was made in 1904, but it actually left the factory in 1911. Seems they sat on the pistol grip frame until a special order eventually happened then they pulled the frame out of the bin seven years later. Here's the Cody record check and the gun. All original.

Completed guns went straight to the warehouse for shipping, or after, waited a few months until sold, or to fill a shipment order. 7 freakin years to test fire and work out some bugs? Employee 5 finger discount until he got caught? That has to have a good story behind it. Michael will want to catalog that one for his 1892 survey. |

BTW, another guy looked up the old cattle brand put on each side of the stock of this rifle and it's from a ranch that was three hours away from where I'm sitting now. Interesting that in the age of high velocity .30-30, 30-40, .30-06, etc. lever action Winchesters of the time someone really wanted a specific special ordered .44-40. |

Well, since someone brought up a model 88, here's another one. I wonder if I posted it long ago in this thread. It's a pre 64 in .284 Winchester that was my dad's favorite gun. I think it's from 1963 because it's pre 64 and I believe the .284 came out in '63. A cartridge ahead of it's time. How many of these in this caliber you think were pre 64? Serial # 1435XXA. Thanks for looking this stuff up for us. I have a 10 round extended aftermarket magazine for it, too.

That's a 1963, the lowest production pre-64 year of 9,020. The last one made in 1963 was ser# 148858. The .284 Winchester was introduced in the Models 88 and 100 for '63 |

Followed you home because it went out for a walk and got lost. I can come and get it, and bring it back home.
All that fancy trimming, and no special order sights? |

Hey Trapp I hope all is well.
Any info on a Winchester Model 12, SN 9684xx (I don't want Google indexing my SN ). It looks like it started life as a USGI Riot gun in 1943? Then made it's way to the Sacramento Police Dept. |

Made Jan of 1942, with 105,207 made that year. Can't recall the numbers, but a lot were Riot or Trench configuration, higher numbers of Riot. I'll ask Bert next time I talk to him, he had more info on the 97's than he did on the 12's. Highest production year, 1953 came close with 102,035, all other years never exceeded 5 digits. |

I found this at a Carson City gun shop. As best I can tell this was manufactured to be a riot gun. I have the book "A Collector's Guide to United States Combat Shotguns" by Bruce Canfield. He states trench guns had a "CYL" stamped barrel and were not tapered. Riot guns had "CYL" and were tapered. This barrel is tapered. Training guns usually had "FULL". Some training guns were re-arsenaled and converted to riot guns by shortening the barrel, lining out "FULL" and stamping "CYL" beneath. This gun has an original "CYL" stamp as well as the flaming bomb on the barrel, and the barrel SN matches the receiver. Thanks for the info Trap. |

Blue would be my choice, and you know how I love a nice color case. Color case on nice engraving is too busy, makes one detract from the other. If you really want it to bling, blue, then have the border and high spots of the engraving buffed back to "in the white". Do you know the history on it, who did the engraving, and was it heat treated before or after? And WTH happened to the rest of it? |

It is an antique so i could have Cody do a number search on it. I sent pictures to Pauline Meurrle and she said it wasn't factory but really well done. The engraving alone would cost 1k+.......I'm gonna send it to Mike Rogers. He is the president of WACA and restores winchesters.....A lot cheaper then Turnbull!

I have an 1873 (517903B) that I aquired from my FIL a few years ago, 23"? octagon barrel in 44 WCF, measured to the front of the receiver. Other than the stepped piece missing from the rear sight it looks complete, the action function though it is very stiff.
This thing is pretty ugly, heavy surface rust, if it was blued at some point in it's life that is all gone. It looks like sometime long ago someone took sand paper to the receiver. I've thought about sending it off to someone to have it evaluated to see if it would be worth restoring. I looked at Turnbull's site and I think they're way out of my league. I'm not a collector (my wife might argue that point) and I'm not looking to make this a museum piece, I'm just curious if this could be made into nice shooter. Anything you can tell will be greatly appreciated. |

Made in the late half of 1963, with 18,104 made that year. Same year Winchester introduced the .284 cartridge.
