Default 10rd mag ok for M&P shield?

I always have carried with my factory 8rd mag but recently picked up a 2 round hyve technologies mag extension making it a 10 round mag. Is it ok to carry with it or should I stick with the 8rd to be safe? All input appreciated.

Only you can answer that.
Does it run reliably? Can you conceal it well? Does your IA have prohibitions on modifications?

Ask yourself what you are comfortable with? Do 30 safe and clear dry fire presentations with both the extended and standard and see what your more comfortable with. Also do mag changes...

Doesn't the larger magazine sort of defeat the point of carrying a shield? Have you considered a larger weapon instead?

I like the hyve but I wouldn't carry them. It's more for range practice. They're not really practical for CCW imo

IWB set up
My extra mag has the +2 hyve mag extension. It's much more comfortable and not so abrasive when up against the skin. But factory mag is in my shield.

I suggest you considering carrying with the standard mag in the gun and carry two additional extended mags.

Why? Because the standard mag keeps the grip profile smaller and less likely to print, while the two extended mads give you a total capacity of 28 +1

I actually prefer the extended if I'm talking about comfort I was asking more along the lines of the legality of it possibly being considered a modification. I live in Orange County if that's any help.

No the reason I carry a shield is because I like that it's slim and feels comfortable in my hand, the extra 3/4" added to the grip doesn't make a difference to me as far as comfort or printing because I normally carry appendix unless driving.

Default 10rd mag ok for M&P shield?

I have the HyVes on my shield and they are awesome. 300+ rds no issues. More of a range toy goodie, as I don't CCW...

I carry a Hyve extension on mine.
Runs well with the gun
Does make it a little harder to conceal

Only your IA will be able to determine if it's acceptable or not. I see it as no different then a pierce grip extension.

I also added the mag guts followers and springs to my 7 and 8 round mags to give me an extra round in each. I opted not to put the mag guts base pads on those mags just so I'd have the option of extra concealment.

You would have to check with your IA.
San Bernardino has no problems with basic modifications that improve reliability and accuracy.
They do strongly recommend that any modifications be performed by a professional smith.
It's not a legal issue... a good shoot is a good shoot, but it is a potential civil issue, and can also be a safety issue.
We just had an incident this week where a woman "shot herself" with her hand nowhere near the holster by a gun she had bought that had been modded by the previous owner for IDPA.

But my understanding is that OC is more picky on modifications, particularly non-factory. I do not know their stance on sights and magazine mods.

LOL. If you need 28 rounds for a gun fight things are not going to end well.

And if you have a malfunction?

"More ammo" is only one of a number of reasons to carry one or more spare magazines.

If you are IN a gunfight, things are not going to end well.
The only way to win a gunfight is to not be in a gunfight.
There are no winners, only survivors.

Carry a revolver. If it doesn't go "boom", pull the trigger again. It will more than likely function without having to deal with unnecessary, time consuming issues that could cost you your life.

Carry as many speed loaders or stripper clips as you see fit.

Don't get me wrong, I carry a Shield, alot, but I am more confident when I carry a wheelgun.

I tend to agree, but I can't shoot an airweight worth a crap.

You do not have to shoot an Airweight. There are plenty of other options.
