Default What's a good Rimfire .22 for under $200?

Looking to get a .22 rimfire for myself and my son and daughter to shoot while at the range. Looking for new or use what's the best for a $200 budget?

You can pick up a Ruger 10/22 for around 200 most places. Plus there are tons of accessories you can pick up afterwards if you wanted.

I haven't seen a 10/22 for 200$ for a long time. If you do find one for that price BUY IT! However Big 5 always has the bolt action savage with 7 round mag for around 140$. Pretty good rifle, has scope mount and all that too!

I'm a big fan of used older .22s. For $200, you can find some great deals out there. I'd look for an old Mossberg, Remington, Winchester, Marlin, Sears, Montgomery Wards, etc.

Under $200: Ruger 10-22, Marlin Model 60, Marlin 795.

Just over $200: Henry H001, Marlin Papoose 70PSS

All good rifles. Choose the features that are most important to you.

Turners has blued 10/22s for $199 every 3-4 weeks.
The Marlin 795 sure has a lot of fans and the price is right.
You also may be able to find a used Marlin 60 for $100 or so.

Remington 597 with Scope combo Bass Pro Shop at Rancho Cucamonga, Bought one last week for $220 out the door with tax and DROS. You also get a $25 mail in rebate ( good till end of the year) from Remington which takes the total damage down to $195.

I just sold an old rem 550-1 for $150

I really think the old stuff blows the doors off the new stuff.

C&R, highest quality, great accuracy, very cool.

Marlin model 60 or 795 or a Ruger 10/22 can be had for right around $200 if you watch the Turners ads. I picked up three for $199 each a few months ago.

All are great choices for an entry level gun.

I just DROSed one yesterday from Corona Turners, there were none in the store but the warehouse had 175. They said it will be there no problem when the 10 days is up. Great price for around $150 including DROS, tax and rebate.

Marlin Model 60 regularly $149 at Turners. Tube fed, holds 14 rounds. I HATE loading 22lr clips with a passion. Zero malfunctions on mine in 2000rds.

If all you looking for is .22 LR as a plinking gun, then any modern gun in good condition will do. You should handle as many as you can and try some on the range, most shooters will let you try their guns.

Then buy gun that fit you best in your price range, new or used.

Just remember that under $200 to me means under $200, when you buy a gun for $199 you will be looking at probably over $260 by the time you pay for all the fee's & taxes & lock. Marlin 795 is on sale and I bought one and posted the total out the door cost as $178.63, then I have to send in the $25 rebate paperwork and will eventually get another $25 off that price so about $154 total cost for the Marlin.

Another vote for the 795. I love mine, really fun and really accurate!
With the money you save on it over a 10/22 you can get a scope or tech sites

btw check out this mega thread about the 795

I bought a +50 year old JC Higgins Model 30 that looks like new, put an older Bushnell 3 to 9X on it for about $20.00, weaver mounts and for $125.00 I have a fun plinker that will hold its own against any other 22.

I love my old SAVAGE 6 I paid $125 for mine on Gunbroke they also made a box magazine version Model 5 or 7 I think THey also made bolt actions similar to this they are great shooters as far as my Stevens 86 and Savage 6 go. Look for similar models under the JC Higgins label (Sears) or Westernfield (Montgomery Wards) labels same action sometimes less fancy stock
I think Savage used walnut on the Savage designated rifles and other hardwood on the Stevens and Springfield labeled rifles. My Stevens/Springfield 86 was a basket case I had to refinishn the stock...light sanding and a couple of coats of Watco dark oil finish rubbed on...looks better than when I got it but no beauty queen. I believe it lived behing somebody's kitchen door for many many years. I also did a cold blue on the barrel and receiver because the finish was almost gone and surface rust was beginning to show its ugly head. I enjoy shooting it with my nephews because it is reliable accurate not picky about ammo and it cost me less than $100 between the gun and replacement parts.
