Follow the yellow brick road! The place is hard to find unless you go with someone that knows.

Per the le Ranger I spoke to at our first clean up there, it is 150 yards from the road and that area is not 150 yards. It is their discretion as to whether they will cite, but it would be wiser to go up the hill.

You know I'm tired of people crying that it's a secret spot. It's not! It's free land! If you pay taxes it's yours to enjoy. Some of us have shed blood for this country so we can all enjoy it and respect it. I've cleaned a lot of crap out there, but enjoyed it 10x more shooting and socializing, so you know what here! Here is how to get there and properly enjoy the free land.

Respect it and respect your fellow shooters!

+1 on this.

The problem is that many people don't respect our land. Combine that with the anti-gun climate, the number of BLM spots within reasonable driving distance is dropping. Try CG search on just "closed" in the title and be frightened.

IMHO, Steele Peak will be closed in the near future. There's not enough cleanups to make the place as it should be like all BLM land -- spotless.

Everyone knows about it...google. The people who trash it are the same people who think boozing and shooting is a great idea. Its no secret, I've known of it for 20+ yrs. Hell, its 20 minutes from my house. But its just smart not to broadcast it, even if someone can find it by other means. These places are like rare gems, too hard to find.

A) Both of you SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
It's like watching children fight.

B) Nate you and those like you are why there are fewer and fewer shooters in California.
You don't want anyone 'new' going out to 'your' secret spot but I have ten bucks that says when bad legislation passes you're complaining that there aren't enough of us calling or doing something.

Here's a tip for you, we're outnumbered in this State and always will be as long as we run off new shooters and make them feel unwelcome.

Who's running off new shooters. Point was about posting on public forums about shooting areas. More often then not, they get shut down due to trash and unsafe shooters.

We have seen it happen many times. There are many on this thread that will pm directions, volunteer for a clean up, or contact the BLM.

By the way, you would lose your ten bucks. I write my letter, make my calls and send my emails. If others don't want to do, that's there choice. Will I ***** about the new laws, absolutely. I do now. If these laws pass we all lose.

Calling people demeaning names and telling them they can't know where the 'good spots' are sure as hell is running people off.
It's the same kind of elitist crap that we get pissed at when our legislators tell it to us.
We're not 'the right kind of people' to be allowed to defend ourselves according to them and 'newbies' aren't 'the right kind of people' to be shooting at 'secret spots'.

Yes we have, that's why instead of hiding shooting spots, there are few enough as it is, we organize clean up efforts, work with the Dept. of Forestry and educate shooters at the spots.

'Hiding' them is not the answer and never works, being a responsible shooter and teaching others to do the same is what works.

The ten buck was not that you call, but that you feel there aren't enough gun owners and shooters who do.

We all know they are not secret, posting them on a public forum is ridiculous. How many open shooting areas have been shut down. Steele peak will be next. It gets trashed and from reading some of the post, it's become unsafe.

The "secret spots" are not secret. I was brought to my new shooting area a few years ago by another on this forum. Luckily, those members here that know about it, don't publicly post it's location. A lot of people go there, and it's clean and safe. If they posted it, it would look like Steele Peak.

Being a responsible shooter and teaching others always works. But when you post it on a public forum and the masses go, you can't. It ends up being the Wild West. Then the closures get put on the news, and us shooters look bad.

Was calling the new member a "newbie" wrong, probably. But so does calling members Aholes for not wanting to give directions. If the new member would have done a search, he would have found the directions, including GPS location on another thread.

LoL. I gave someone coordinates so that he could meet me there on Friday and he punched them into google and got the intersection off the main road (which was where I told him to wait for me) and he drove past it because he was not familiar with the area.

This is a double edged sword. I too do not readily give out locations on places to shoot in forums that anybody can access FOR THAT REASON. Personally I am glad that all of these jackasses and their i-phones are getting bad directions from apple... Let them look it up, and end up in Lake Elsinore. Sadly though I do not have a better solution other than to just not say anything. Well, I will see what they have contributed in the forums, but if someone just shows up and asks then they are not getting info from me. If they have a certain number of posts and by looking at their posts they seem like decent folks who have also contributed or just seem like decent folks, I will take the chance and PM them if they are asking because yes, it IS free, but JUST because it is free does not mean that EVERYBODY should know where it is. (double edged sword time). I guess it is for the SAME reason why folks do not like to give out their favorite hunting spot or their favorite fishing spot. Cause everyone will go there and they just lost their favorite spot... This is MY opinion and that is fine if anyone cares to disagree with it. I really could care less. I also do enjoy telling people that I think would greatly benefit from knowing where it is and especially if I know them and they are like minded and responsible enough to clean up after themselves. Maybe when I get a new truck I will set aside a bin or space to pack a small amount of garbage out every time I go. Right now I will have to settle for taking out a bucket full of shells or shotty hulls (thanks to the jerks that left about 200 PINK hulls all over behind the hill on Friday. I got most of them and now they are in my recylce bin). AT least it was clean enough to chrony and shoot a little bit. I think I also picked up about 2 lbs of lead from the hill side. If there is an easier and convenient way to recover lead then walking around and picking it up, please someone inform me. I like public shooting spots because I REALLY like to look for cases and lead so that I can take it back and save it to melt down at a later time. It would sure save me from prying open some car batteries that I have sitting around.

I think the real problem goes back to the internet crowd and technology. Technology has made too many people impatient so they (and by they I mean all kinds) look up places to go shoot and then go shoot, and they really have no business going to a FREE spot because of their bad habits but they go there anyways and they don't give a damn and leave things behind because they are hipsters and the last time they looked, wooden frames are biodegradable and so are cardboard boxes that bullets came in and so are... And that rationalizing is what is bad for the shooters that use that location. But who cares, its free and everyone should get a chance to go there right? Just like healthcare, EVERYONE should be able to have affordable (and by affordable, we mean free if you can not afford it) healthcare...

There, fixed it; sarcasm tags ON...

It's not good enough that when we go shooting on BLM land that we cleanup our stuff. We have to make it clean enough so that it doesn't encourage others to leave trash. That means removing all evidence of all target material (TVs, furniture, tanks, stands), general trash (beer bottles, food wrappers, etc.), shotgun hulls (the colors make it look really), clay pigeons (even though it's biodegradable, it looks like sh*t and most BLM areas want it picked up anyway), and then brass.

If the shooting area is spotless, then it's easier for the ranger or other LEO to enforce / prosecute the scumbags.

Here's a small area I saw 9 months ago. It's now shut down. BTW, there's a jet ski in front of the big rock behind the cheap target stand. Sad.

I ride dirt bikes, the same rule applies. Never give out your riding spots. Too many people show up, it gets dangerous, people start dumping trash, sounds familiar.

I started off as a private member of Rockpile, the county shut it down. Then I moved down the hill and around the back side, also shut down. I moved further down the road, now the whole road is shut down.

Now there is one sandy ridge where everyone is jammed together.

I have been watching Steele peak area get smaller and smaller and I have only been out there for three or four years.

On Friday there was a fire burning near Santa Rosa Mine, has anyone been out there to see if the range caught fire?

The area around the range seems to catch fire at least once a year.

Default BLM site locations

Hello everyone,
New to Calgun forums, never actually joined any forums ever but these BLM locations got me excited to actually sign up. I live in Los Angeles and recently finished my AR-15 build. I wanted to fire my rifle in one of these sites. I know giving the coordinates to specific locations could be a bit sensitive to some. I have made lots of research and know the danger these sites hold as for as keeping them clean. I for one do not suffer from this bad habit of leaving my trash behind. Having been in the Army for some time, i have learned to pick up my own brass as well as any other trash i have taken with me. I also do not mind cleaning up the area i use as best as i can even if it is not my own trash.
so if anyone could PM me any coordinates to some good areas even some closer to the LA area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys for your time

I've never been to one of the "official" organized clean-ups. I just make sure to clean my own mess and haul out as much trash as I can safely retrieve from the area without getting shot.

Which leads to my question...

Does a ranger show up to keep non-calgunners from setting up and start shooting? In other words, do we get the opportunity to have the area to ourselves to safely wander around and collect trash without having to deal with ricochets, or worse?

Any word yet on the next clean up date? I read it's tentatively set for mid Feb ~ mid March. Hope it doesn't fall on weekends of 3/22 or 3/29.

During the official clean ups I've been to the rangers shut the place down until we are done.

Yea, the one clean up we all did back in April last year the ranger did shut the place down to shooters so we would be safe. There was people that came to shoot the didnt know their was a cleanup and they ended up helping clean cause they were already there. I think we should do it again in April, but its not up to me.

I hear what you are saying. It is a tough call sometimes. I like to share and we all want fellow RESPONSIBLE commiefornia gun owners to be able to have a place to shoot but damn those few bad apples ruin it for EVERYONE. I have had people hit me up in a PM giving me sob (sob as in cry, not sonofa*****)stories about how they are looking to go shooting and blah blah blah. Then the first time or two I fell for it and I gave directions and never even got a "thanks". So those few ruined it for the rest that followed. Now if someone asks me, I tell them this, become a contributor and show that you give a damn and maybe after a period of 6-12 months of being a member, I will share that info with you if you ask again.

And I don't care WHAT some people here may say, THAT is NOT an elitest attitude. I want to further our cause just as much as the next responsible gun owner here, but I aint gonna just tell everyone. It has gotten so hard to go shooting out there now sometimes. I am like, DAMN... I am glad that there is another great range in Riverside. Yes you have to pay and I wish they would let me shoot my ak pistol there, but it is a decent range and the guys are cool. And THAT is why Riverside Magnum Range gets my business when I want to test out accuracy with my guns.

Whenever the next cleanup is planned.
I have a small truck I was there last week doing a function test on a new build and the place looks like S#%@ again.
Me and my son can only take out so much when we shoot out there.

Won't be long until we loose another spot to shoot

I shoot at Steel Peak weekly.

Put me on the list. I can bring food, water, rakes, trash bags, people (all shooters) and a couple pickup trucks

Pm me with details of what you may need.

And I will keep looking at this thread to see if we have a date.

Regards,

Will the clean up be posted in this thread? Or is there another thread with details? Also I've seen that people recommend 4X4. Is it accessible for a regular car? Have not shot there yet, but sounds like a cool place and id love to help keep it alive.

When the date is set for the clean up something will be posted here.

I have not been there since early November and the first hill was pretty tore up but there were a couple cars in there..... others will have to chime in on current conditions.

It probably as worse as I've ever seen it. Overcrowded and trash everywhere. Fire was started last Saturday and burned a good portion. I think that's the 3rd or 4th fire I've seen this season. Lets keep it safe out there guys.

Where was the fire at, how far in?

Later tonight I will post the date and time in the clean up thread and cross post here, just waiting on one last confirmation.
