1st time out for my 9 yo, and he was sad....
sad we had to leave. =)
went to zero in a couple sights and decided to take my 9 yo. we have been working on basic safety and function. started a couple moths back with a Daisy lever action BB gun and did great, which carried over great today. CZ 452 Scout with a cheapo Bushnell 4x32 his shot group at 30ft. he was shooting a CZ 452 scout with a bushnell 4x32 |

I'm glad I opted to go with the CZ scout. seems like he'll out grow the single shot quick. which is why I like how it has the option with either taking a 5 or 10 round magazine as well as the block off plate to be single shot. versus a chipmunk where it was a single shot only. on thing is is the scout is pretty hefty as far as weight for him to shoot in supported for now at least. ill have to start looking into the Appleseed stuff.

We shoot at steel mostly at our local range. Reactive targets seem to keep their interest better. I do plan on taking the older one to an Appleseed this summer.

by the end of the trip, he was cycling fairly quick. just had to remind him to make sure to take his time and realign his shot. I told him not to waste my ammo by not hitting red. lol. especially the small flyer to the left. but overall I think he did well especially for his first time out. he was always making sure to place safety on when I stopped him to review last shot and go over instruction. after every shot he made sure to repeat the same process by aligning shot with finger off trigger, then placing finger on trigger and confirming his alignment, then taking the shot. never had to stop him because he gr sloppy, or became unsafe at any time.

Nice vid. I have my 9 y.o. do the same. I haven't graduated him to a scope yet.

Have him write and post a 200 word essay on why he likes to shoot and I will send him a set of eyes and ears.
Up to $50 worth at Midway. Cheers, Pete.

wow, that's awesome. I've been trying to coach him on how small things in life coorlate to gun handling safety before announcing I'd be taking him to shoot with me. he didnt quite understand what ive been trying to do. until I finally told him to keep up the good job with small things in life so it would transcend from school work to shooting and how in theory they are linked ie: taking your time with penmanship to taking your time lining up your shot so neither is "sloppy" I think he started to get why I've been saying its important to take what seem to be silly rules into consideration and how they actually are important. I was planning on showing him this thread so he cansee how well he did, and by your generous offer this gives him a chance to practice his writing skills. and that would be a great motivator.

Cool, happy to help.
Have him start with the four rules and why they are important. PM me with a shipping address and what you would like from Midway and wait for the big brown truck.

I wasn't certain if I should've gone straight to a scope. however, it was an extra scope I had and very inexpensive. plus with how well he did with the BB gun non scoped shooting at probably slightly larger than half dollar sized targets at probably 20-25 feet in different sequences I figured it would be okay.

Good Dad. And I really think those CZ's are high quality rifles.!
Some of the best times at the Range were with my 5 kids. 4 are grown-up adult gun owners; one left at home who still goes with me to shoot her Glock. It's all good my friend, all good.

This is really cool! My son just turned 8 and I can't wait to get him out on the 10/22. I bought him a toy gun for his birthday and am teaching him the fundamentals and rules of safety. What is cool about this toy gun is that it has all of the features of a real gun. It has a safety, you have to load each round into the tube magazine and rack the action each time you want to fire a shot. It fires these little biodegradable paint balls that you can wash off with the hose and it will not stain clothing. I set up a target on our tree and have him shoot the target, then when he is done, I just hose it off. I got him eye pro and ear pro as well and make him wear it every time he shoots.

we're in San Diego. really excited to show him this thread. I'm sure this will be the first time he will be excited in writing an essay. I was even thinking of taking him back today. he will be excited in earring his eyes/ears and ammo. I told him I'd keep his ammo seperate so this will teach him ammo consumption which hopefully transfer to money too.

Sorry took so long, have been busy between sick kids and work. Which sadly shows in his writing as he stated what I have known in which we don't get to do much together.
Rule #1 always treat the gun like if it's loaded even if it's on safe the gun will still be able to go off, just in case it IS loaded, keep it on safe at all times. Rule #2 never cover the muzzle with anything that you do not want to destroy or NEVER point a gun at a person. Rule #3 at all times keep your finger off the trigger or you would either injure, hurt or even kill someone, only put finger on the trigger when lined up with target and ready to shoot. Rule #4 make sure to watch your target and your targets surroundings to make sure nothing bad or stupid happens. I enjoy shooting, because you get to have fun and you can see how you can get better and better each time you go. I only went once to the range and tried it out, and it was FUN! It's fun because it helps me focus on my goal and like focusing on work in school, they both have something I have to focus on. Shooting helps me aim and focus on what ever I am doing. I always need to get prepared before I go shooting in real life. I feel excited because I got time to spend with my dad because I don't get to spend time with him during the week. The weekend too because he works Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and every other Saturday so I don't get much time to spend him. I feel great when I hit the bullseye because I should keep hitting the bullseye and aiming like last time when I hit the bullseye. I feel o.k. when I miss the bullseye I just need to be aiming better and when the bullet comes out when I shoot too not shake as much, because it will effect my shot and will aim in another direction. The steps to take a shot are first make sure you aim and your target is lined up. Second put your finger on the trigger but don't pull it back yet. Third make sure you are still lined up and pull the trigger when you are ready to shoot, and remember to take your time. |

This is so very cool. You are obviously a caring father, your son is obviously a pretty good kid, and there are several very generous people in this thread already providing supplies to encourage his interest and the time he gets to spend with you doing something you both enjoy. Faith in humanity is restored. . Good job OP, you must be very proud. And way to go tkm and oceanbob! Very generous!

Awesome! I started very early too, and I think it is something that contributed to keeping me out of trouble as a youngster. If I got into trouble, one of the first recreations to go away was range time with my dad!
It's nice that you get to spend some quality time with your youngster! |

Those CZs are one amazing rifle and it has personally driven me back into shooting after a few year hiatus. I am sure your son will enjoy the gun and become a great shooter.
