Default Proof of citizenship or residency to buy firearms?

Was at Turners yesterday and there was a sign on the door advising that its okay to have an FLA ID so long as you bring proof of citizenship or legal residency along. I know this was the stipulation to buy ammo after July 1st. but how did the ammo law get carried over into firearms? I'm sure that caught many by surprise and had people had known this, there probably would have been a mad dash for gun sales in mid June. BTW my ID is an older 2017 ID that doesn't say FLA but I'm sure those that do are pissed!

I’ve gone twice this week to buy firearms via ppt. Since I have a federal limits ID, i have had to use my passport to start the DROS.

Are you saying that in the past you have bought a firearm without CA drivers license or a CA. ID.

FLA CA drivers license + passport or federally compliant drivers license alone is my understanding.

I have FLA CA and passport so it’s whatever for me. I’m not going to update my DL, I just plan to use my passport.

No. I bought firearms last fall twice with my current CDL issued 2017 without problem other than an address change because I moved. At that time the issue of having to have a passport with an FLA ID was not apparent so why all of sudden now after July 1st?

I always thought you had to have a CA DL or a CA ID to purchase firearms.

I thought you were required to get at least a CA ID once you establish residency in CA.

My bad.

Simple the federal limits apply"dl" simply is not a valid proof of citizenship. Since ca will give it out to anyone. Real I'd and you are good to go.

As someone who used to only be a permanent resident (now a naturalized citizen), I could still buy guns. Now I have a CA DL that does NOT have FLA or RealID. Weird...

You are GTG with your 2017 issued CDL until it expires for firearm/ammo purchases.

FLA CDL only became an issue this yr with Ca-DMV screwing the pooch on compliance for "Real-ID" CDL.

Now, if someone has a FLA-CDL, they need other form of Fed accepted ID.

IIRC, even those of us with Pre-FLA CDL's will need other Fed accepted ID to board a plane or enter Federal buildings, after Oct.

The only thing that surprises me is that a so called Man over the age of 18, let alone 25, is either too lazy or unprepared as an adult to get themselves a legitimate ID.

So before I can get a Real ID, I have to renew my expired passport. To renew my expired passport I need to go to the passport office in the Federal building. To get inside the Federal building I need a Real ID or current passport. Do you see where this is going? I could apply for a new passport by mail through the post office but that's another Federal building..........Argh!!!

If you own your home. County tax bill qualifies as Gov. proof of residence.

Why wouldn't a DD214 work for proof of residency?

If you have your birth certificate. You don't need your passport.
Here is a link to the list of documents.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/realid

Print it out. I took this with me to the DMV and highlighted the documents I took with me.
DMV lady gave me a high 5.
Outta there in 40 minutes.

Make a appt in the .morning. do it now because it may be three months till you get a appt in the morning.
