Default Scope on AR and AK

Why do people use scope on AR and AK rifle? I can understand red dot but scopes? Base on my understanding these rifle are battle rifle and are meant for close to medium range combat. The purpose of scope on these rifle are out of my understanding. Someone wants to elaborate?

Sure.
My right eye sucks.
Yesterday I tried to shoot someone's rifle without a scope at 100 yards and I couldn't find the target. I didn't just not hit the target. I couldn't find it through the sights.
But with my scoped AK and AR I can get very respectable groupings.
I am also not likely to get into any firefights. But I kill a lot of paper...

Sometimes you need to shoot something more than 100yds away and you dont have the eyes of a hawk.

Important to hunters too, where precision.is key to a clean kill and you often dont get a 2nd chance if you miss your first shot.

Try shooting prarie dogs at 200-400 yards with irons...

Then let me know why optics you are looking to add to your rifle.

A scope also functions as an important observation tool.

For my tired eyes, it makes shooting more enjoyable at 100 yds and beyond.
Though I still like shooting the M1 garand at 200 & 300 yds with iron sights.

Depends on how you have it setup.

Example

I just finished a new AR, did a lot of work and spent a fair bit of money on good parts to make an accurate varmint rifle I can use out to 300 yards. If you can use a red dot or irons to hit a coyote sized target at 300 yards good for you, I can't

if on the other hand you are making an M4 clone, yea kind a waste to put a powerful scope on it if you're only going to be shooing 100 yards or less. Beautiful thing about the AR, it can be any gun you want it to be, from a .22lr cheap plinker to a mid range target rifle to a .50 Beowulf big game rifle with just a change of an upper receiver.

AK is a little tougher to justify, but to each their own.

I prefer to engage threats at maximum range, why give up an advantage? I would prefer to shoot someone before they could shoot me. For hunting it's an ethical edge. Irons for close in and back up needs. Pretty simple. A KISS rig is nice but still a second pick to a nicely decked out rig. Ak's are irons only for me. They just beg to lob rounds for some reason.

With a red dot sight you're probably not going to shoot bulls at 100yds, you'll be thrilled to just hit within the black. With a scope at 100 yds you should be hitting the bull or at least staying close to it. I have red dot on my 16" and a scope on my 18". Both rifles are intended for different purposes.

Most of us civilians use our rifles for something other than combat. Your premise is flawed. Trolling fail. Troll harder next time.

Because shooting is fun. Shooting with optics, for many, is funner.

Since you mentioned combat, most troops rifles today are topped with 4x acogs, 1-4x Elcans, or eotechs or aimpoins with 3x magnifiers. My godsons issue m4 in the Rangers is an eotech and 3x flip to side magnifier. His SAW has an elcan.

Just because they are called "battle rifles" doesn't mean they are restricted to short range use.

The 5.56x45 round can reach out to 600 yards effectively. The 7.62x51 NATO round (AR-10 and M14) can reach out to 1,000 yards.

The 7.62x39 AK round can reach out to 400 yards and beyond. The notion of inherent inaccuracy of the AK is out dated and based on early and cheaply produced AKs in the late 40s and through the 50s. Read C. J. Chivers' book "The Gun".

Why a scope? Why not?? You can't hit what you can't see. Duh.

Not every AR fires 223/556. Some people actually use them for hunting and not shooting paper

I am confident that mostly all of us don't use ar or ak as battle rifles...its for the love of the sport...we are all up for challenges to see if we can hit our targets at say 50 yards / 100 yards etc...the beauty of this hobby is you can customize it any way you like...kinda like why baskin Robbins has 31 flavors...not everyone is going to order the same ice cream.

in my younger days, I was trained to shoot AR with iron sights out to 500 yards, and can hit 9 out 10 in the black from prone position...

a scope would make it easier, especially if someone can't see what they are shooting at with iron sights...

The M-16 I carry on watch isn't a battle rifle anymore? I'll be sure to let the SECNAV know the next time he comes for a visit.

Bunch of armchair commandos around here.
