I've looked around - there's a few Loadeds at a decent price, and 1-2 TRPs that seem reasonable in the FS section. I'll probably go look at a few more and think about if it's a priority now, or back burner (where the idea has been for at least 10 years... which a) shows my age and b) perhaps indicates I really do want one.

Be careful about buying a TRP!
I bought my first 1911 about 2-1/2 yrs ago, a TRP full-rail. An now, look what it caused!....

Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Galt. I've read about you & your engine. However, I admire your family much more than your engine. I must write that you've accumulated beautiful offspring.
You're right about the TRP. That is one heck of a work of art. But I want my Professional Model & I want it now ;-) |

When thinking 1911-A1, think quality.
The 1911-A1 is an extremely simplistic design. Hence, lots of manufacturers market versions of it. The Springfield Armory Loaded Model is a excellent entry gun. It will cause 1911-A1 acquisition disease. I'm awaiting my 4th Springfield Armory: the Professional Model. I have a 50% deposit on a copy. I should have it in my hands inside of 2 months. I've purged my Colts. I like SA's quality much, much better. They're made in the USA by American gunsmiths. You can pay a heck of a lot more for 1911-A1, but you won't be buying better quality. Keep in mind that this is merely my opinion that is shared by a massive cadre of 1911-A1 aficionados: a 1911-A1 should be blued steel, wood or, and chambered for .45 ACP. |

OP, if you want a 1911 and can afford a good quality 1911, it's not stupid. One caveat... don't buy a cheap 1911. If it doesn't run right, you won't be happy and you'll have wasted that money. Go with a quality manufacturer - Springfield is a good example of a quality 1911 that won't break your bank account. I have Colts, Springfields and Para-Ordnance (OK, call me weird, I like the LDA trigger system) and the Springfield easily matches latter-day Colt quality IMO.

EMP3... Thanks for the kind words, and yes, the TRP got me hooked on 1911's. Regarding the SACS Professional, you'll see 2 of those in the photo... A non-railed Pro and a bit of a rarity, a TG0-1. Also, the family photo is a little old and there are 6 more not pictured ;-)

My preferred handgun is a 1911. Springfield 1911 are on sale at Turner's, and would be about $1000 OTD. They. are the Loaded version, and come with the options most 1911 fans upgrade too. I have two Springfield Loaded 1911s, and they are both very accurate pistols. There are not too many 9mm 1911 on the CA roster. The 9mm in a full size 1911 has very little recoil and is easy to shoot well. The 45 ACP is also on sale too. Just cannot go wrong. Once you start with 1911, you may never go back to anything else. Enjoy.

Since you said, you don't see yourself stocking rounds for more than one pistol, I would go for a Springfield 1911 9MM Loaded. It's stainless and have a lot of features people want from their basic 1911s. I first got into 1911s via a 9MM Colt Commander, then picked up a few Loaded 9MMs because for the money, it's a good value. You can find them for a decent price and then with the money left over, get yourself some Tripp or Wilsom 9MM Mags with a ton of ammo.
If you like the 1911 platform at that point, get yourself a 45acp. The 9MM in 1911 is a gateway to 45acp if you like the platform. 9MM gives you a cheap round to shoot as you know already. Then with very little recoil because of the 1911 weight.

I have other guns. I prefer my 1911s. The platform is like a comfortable glove that fits so right. I have a few of them. My work horse is the SA Loaded. It is very reliable and fun to point and shoot. I don't have a custom 1911 but do have a nice Dan Wesson Pointman 7 in 10MM that I adore. That gun is fit so nice and action that is so smooth that I haven't had the urge to spend plus $2,800 on a semi-custom gun the likes of an Ed Brown or Nighthawk. Yes, I know you can spend more.

Dip your toes in the deep end, Sig 1911r or Springer EMP is a great place to start an obsession. Lots of people are still unhappy with choices Springfield have made, but both are worthy. I own and shoot several and have no regrets.

My recommendation for a first 1911 would be to get one with adjustable target sights if it's a range gun. Springfield Loaded models in 9mm and .45 cal are good values, but a TRP full rail is a great gun to shoot because of the added mass in the frame.
My personal favorites to shoot are Nighthawk Hiene long slide, GRP with RMR, and Les Baer P2 SuperTac. Sent using Tapatalk

No problem with the numerous 1911 9MM pistols I have. Do you have a 9MM 1911?

OP, I understand the desire. I sold my last 1911 over 5 years ago. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore! I have a Wilson Combat Professional Elite .45 ACP in its 10 day prison right now, and I believe its going to be the longest and hardest 10 day of my dozens of pistols purchased under the wait period. My first venture from revolvers into auto pistols was a SA Milspec .45. It was a good, reliable pistol and I enjoyed it. 1911 is America's pistol and I think a Springfield in .45 ACP, its original caliber is the way to go. Good luck and enjoy.

No I don't have a 9mm 1911, I won't buy one cuz no one makes a full size frame that fits the 9mm round. It seems lazy as hell to me, especially with the money that's floating around in the firearm industry these days.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll shoot for (no pun intended) a 1911 sometime soon. Likely I'll look for a used DW, or Springfield in Loaded or TRP depending on what's available. I'm in no hurry and will see if I can find a good deal.
I appreciate the input from the community as it helps put things in perspective. |

I don't really get what you're saying. My full size SA Loaded 9mm seems to load, fire, and eject 9mm rounds all day long. Where is this alleged compromise?

Buying a 1911 doesn't add to your handgun collection. Buying a 1911 adds to your 1911 collection. I started with Les Baer.

Do a bit of youtube search on production videos for different brands. Very few make their stuff from bar stock to finish product. Then consider which you desire more a 1911 assembled/fitted all by hand or assembled by hand and fitted by CNC.

If a person is on a tight budget do not be afraid of the RIA 1911. I bought my tac 5 about five years ago and have shot it many times.I did install nice rosewood dbl diamond grips on it.
It looks just like new still and i have never had a problem with mags or ammo. Even steel case TULA works fine. Some 1911s costing twice as much are not any better. |

FWIW I went on the 1911 trail just like the OP is conflicted between the TRP and the DW. Now solely for a one and done government size 1911, get the DW (I'm guessing OP is looking at the PM7). Just a modern classic look. But like everyone else has already mentioned...you won't just have one 1911. Current stable: Springfield TRP (full rail - my first real 1911) Colt Series 70 (still getting work from local smith) Dan Wesson CBoB ATI/GSG 1911 22lr trainer
