Wilson combat beretta would be on my short list too....since you like berettas. A bit above your budget but not by too much.

Since you are in a free state...short barrel AR-15 in 300 Blackout and put a suppressor on it.
Or...300 Blackout pistol with brace and supressor so you can take the gun out of state without permission (maybe not the can, but the gun )

Not just a picture. Nice looking gun tho. I have a Clark Custom Smith 41 and as pretty as the finish is, and all that hard edged barrel and all, I just don't warm up to it like I do my Smith 19, or My 1911. Call me an anachronist. As for the R8, I already have a TRR8 which is for all practical purposes the same. And a damn fine revolver to boot. I used to think it was ugly as anything, but I pulled the top rail and put a decent grip and it looks just fine now! It bothered me with the octagon barrel as it looks so Webley'ish. and there is no uglier revolver IMO. The Rubber hogue grip didn't help either, Nor a top rail I wouldn't use, I left the bottom rail on, but likely will never use it. God forbid you let off a round while finger forward on a momentary switch ... Buhbye piggie! 2nd from bottom

If I could find one like they were a few years ago at $1200, I would, but people are getting carried away, at least when I last looked in CA.
I guess I should revisit it, I freaking love MP5, but resigned myself to not having one once the prices jumped so hight, and not really interested in a POF one.

Depending what area you’ll be settling in and hunting in Idaho, a nice very practical Ruger Redhawk with 4.2” barrel in 44 magnum.
Or as they say, when in Rome, how about Ruger Super Blackhawk 4-5/8” barrel in 44 mag? I read Grizzly bears may soon have an open season on them in Idaho.

Under $1000 limits your choices. Saying no plastic guns REALLY limits your choices.
Two brands that jump to mind that fit your criteria are the Caniks and AREXs. Both makers offer several options under $1000. The AREXs are based on a design that closely resembles the P226. The top of the line AREX is red dot capable (like Glock's MOS system), suppressor sights and a threaded barrel. Canik offers a wide variety of configurations from a 15 rd compact to a 20 rd competition ready model with the capability to accept different red dots. The SF, SFX and Elite Canik models have great triggers. And they all offer a great deal of value for their price ($300-550). Reliable and good shooters. By far, the most sought after gun, the hot ticket, is the Sig P365. They are difficult to find, but I did manage to rent one. I know you said no plastic guns, but you really aren't a gun guy if you can't appreciate this little gun's significance. It shoots as accurately as your P938 (my 938 is very accurate). It is perhaps a bit snappier that the P938 because it carries its weight high, but its certainly manageable. I could easily keep five shots in a 1" circle at 7 yards. It will drop in the front pocket of your jeans with a ten or TWELVE round magazine. Read that last sentence twice. It disappears in the front pocket of my 36" waist Levi 505s. If you are going to carry, you really need to check one out. Oh, I almost forgot. The P365 costs less than the P938 (around $600). Those are my suggestions, but you could always pick up a Dan Wesson revolver for around a grand. Sorry, I can't offer any info because I've never shot one. |

PTR is making one now too. I think they are like 14-1500. Checked one out at a Boise LGS the other day. Put on an arm brace and go have some fun There are two models. Both have a lugged barrel, one also has threads the other doesn’t. If PTR is building these as well as their g3/hk91 clones, they’ll rock. Already video out I think from Atlantic running one with a f/a trigger pack flawlessly. Good luck, have fun and congrats on the escape!!!!!! Very nice. I'm also a traditionalist when it comes to revolvers. I'm really only interested in S&Ws and Colts specifically the M3, M10, M19, M27/28, M36/M60. Colt revolvers are just out of my price range but I have 03+COE now so maybe I'll be able to find an older one that is more affordable. I do have a couple of 1873 SAA clones.

SLO, just get whichever model of the P238 that floats your boat as a sexier alternative to that P380 you carry in the pocket. Weighs a few more ounces, but is more aesthetically pleasing (at least to my eye). Load it up with one of the Xtreme series (Defender or Penetrator, just makes sure it shoots ‘em) and call it a day for well under a grand.

I think I'd go CZ 97 BD or for about half your budget CZ Rami BD. Maybe a matte stainless 75

For another all steel gun under $700, look also at the Jericho 941.
The one major issue for those leaving the state is the lower income outside of CA. In the nursing profession, in particular, the income disparity can be huge. True that lower living costs may offset this to some degree, but the fact is that OP's price limit is $1000. In the $1300 range, I'd go for a Sig P226 SAO Legion, or a Shadow 2.

If you find any stainless CZ75, be sure to PM me. I've kept my eyes peeled for them for a while and there are none for sale. (No, no CA off roster guns for me, they're better off staying in CA )

Thats what is so great about the Tanfos they can be converted to any chambering (9mm, 38super, .40, 10mm, .45). They are all on the same large frame. I think the Shadow 2 is only in 9mm?

I would really like to get a sweet single action such as Freedom arms, but prudence tells me I am set with the .454. Good idea though, I love Bisleys too. Maybe a Bisley hunter. Too bad they don't offer in .454 last I recall, nor 45 colt which would also work for me. I will keep the idea of a nice single big bore in the list, thanks! Yes, they are talking about opening for Grizzly, I believe due to census they were talking about 50 some tags per year, and review yearly. I also heard that in Idaho falls the percentage of hunters is about 12% which is a steep drop from some 20-30 years ago. Good for those of us that hunt (easy tags), not really all that great for the sport itself though.

I really like the resonance in a steel or alum frame (beretta for instance), as it tends to offer better feel through the trigger pull IMO. Just personal preference. I really like the Dan Wesson Revolver idea, particularly their interchangable barrel model. Further, I will look at the P365, frankly, I don't even know what the pistol is yet. I have a couple pocket pistols (Kahr P380, Smith 442), and they do fine, I do like the 12 round pocket pistol idea though. Doubting the pocketability of it at that size though. I guess I will need to look at them. Again, thanks to all for the suggestions!

It was my pack gun, for CA and OR packing/fishing trips (to stay legal while packing ) But I got a little 3" JFrame that was lighter and still tossing .357 so that has taken its place. Not because it is better, just lighter, and I won't worry about scratching it if I sit on a granite rock while out. That would make me sad on my 19 LOL At any rate, I love this pistol, may as well share a pic! There is a S&W collector here on this site that gave me a great head's up on this knife as well. I just thought it was some generic Buck made for S&W for this gun, but apparently it is from a famous knife maker by the name of "Blackie" (Collins?), and he only did this for a couple years. Who knows, but it turned this pistol of mine from an EDC/pack gun to a princess haha! I have the Trophy grips for it, but stupidly in the pic I have some Hogue grips on it (they are marginal quality and fit, and just clunky IMO).

I would run one of them for sure! 9mm suppresses real nice too! I have a UMP so that will likely be my first stamp for a suppressor for that (no cash in the piggy for FA sear - not by a long shot haha!).

I will poke around the Tanfoglios as well. Seems their higher end stuff has been more target oriented and I like my fixed sights for carry.

On another thread I just saw the Dan Wesson Wraith. Another budget destroyed! Damn that thing is nice! I like 45acp as it is easy to suppress, but the idea of carrying a slabside with 9rd of hot 10mm as my new pack gun and EDC combo is a pretty nifty combo. Only thing. There is no (effectivelty) suppressing 10mm one would think. But damn that pistol is nice! $2k buy in per the DW site, I wonder how much at my local shop. Wondering on waits too. Sure jumped to the lead haha! I guess I need to revise/remove the budget comment in the OP ! Thanks all!

I know that they are super desireable, but never really understood why. I am not into the futuristic stylings of some of the 60s and 70s pistols, and this always impressed me as one of those. No offense intended.
I truly am curious, from those in the know. Why are these pistols so coveted? Is it the unobtanium factor (can't get/find it?), or are they mechanically and practically superior? If so, in what ways? Thanks!

The Wraith, now you're talking. Bye, bye, $1K budget.
I opted for the 9 mm as I find myself shooting my 10mm Bruin very little due to ammo cost. I have a 10mm Tanfoglio Hunter for back country CCW. That, too, gets shot very little at $0.50/rd.
