New mag fed Mossberg 590M
Saw the new mag fed Mossberg in the Turners ad and had to put down a deposit on the ghost ring sight version. Looks like it might be a while before they get any in though. My question is if anyone might know if putting a pistol grip on would violate any laws? I've gone through flow charts, but a mag fed pump action seems to be a new animal and I just don't want to have any compliance issues. Thanks in advance for any info.

Thank you for the replies. I checked out the remington dm, but it uses single stack magazines. From what I've read Mossberg is the first one to come up with a reliable double stack mag, shortening mag and adding capacity.

"...available in 5, 10, 15, and 20-Round, and are for use with 2.75” shotshells." Remington 870DM "...available with 3-, and 6-round mags." Of course reliability will be key. I sure would like to have each side by side to see how the 6 round single stack and the larger capacity double stack magazines feel in hand. Given the purpose of making a pump-action shotgun magazine fed, I eagerly await reading the feedback of those fortunate to soon get their hands on one of these guns...or both?

I shot the Mossberg at Industry Day this year. I have to say that it was the first 590 that didn't beat my cheekbone up... don't know if there's been any changes to the stock. The mag worked fine when I fired it, but they're HUGE. Carrying them might be just a little inconvenient, and if you're not carrying spares, why have a mag fed shotgun in the first place?
I handled the Remington but didn't get a chance to shoot it. The big thing I don't like is the mag release location - right on the front of the magwell.

Is it practical? Maybe not. But you have 10 rounds ready to go, and with just 1 more mag you get 10 more rounds real quick. Plus it just looks cool. Can't wait to see the look on my father in laws face when he sees it!

Doesn't have to be practical if that's not what you're after. If "practical" were an absolute prerequisite, I wouldn't have half the guns in my safe!

I'd like to shoot one, but no I don't want one.
And I love, love my worked in 590A1. I like to be able to rack a pump properly and smoothly. If I want 10 on tap I go this route. Smooth |

Seriously don’t understand... the magazine tube is still there... that magazine is ginormous... two more rounds???

I don’t see a market for this rifle. Expensive mags, bulky profile, and the benefit is only two rounds. I rather keep my existing 7+1 with the 4 extra shotshells in the stock. If you can’t get it done with 8, I don’t know if two more is going to help.
But it is a free country. I like black powder pistols which have no practical use other than enjoyment.

Despite my not being exactly in love with the mag fed Mossberg, I do see a market for anyone who would rather shoot and load their shotgun more like their semi-auto handgun or rifle - that is, insert a fresh mag rather than "shoot one, load one; shoot two, load two; etc." that is the current state of the loading art for tube-fed shotguns. If I were still using shotguns as fighting tools, I'd probably be adopting either the Mossberg or the Remington and working around their quirks for the benefit of quick loading. BTW, I didn't have any problems operating the Mossberg's slide action - the mag did not get in the way for me.
Like many facets of the firearms world, it's not for everyone.

I personally don't like how bulky it is, it seems like the Mag will be in the way. I have a M500 with all the Magpul stuff on it and a Velcro side saddle that I can change out quickly with extras on the belt.
I feel this is a more viable option than a huge box magazine,,, as if push really came to shove and you ran out both your 10 round mags what are you going to do then? Can you port load this thing? If it doesn't have a cartridge lifter that blocks rounds from falling out the bottom that might be a problem. What happens if you remove the mag? Can you port load it then? Too much not known about running these guns to make a relevant point one way or another about them. It does look scary and that maybe be a deterrent. Probably see one at Front Sight next month. Randy

For those who have taken at least 2 fighting shotgun classes- would you consider a mag fed shotgun?

all Mossberg had to do was make a cheap single stack and they would be golden. but no they f**ked up and just had to go tacticool double stack fat as a brick and expensive as he11 mags. this will flop and hard. i love mossberg shotguns (hence my username), no way will i ever be spending money on one of theses things.

Reloading is a slow process for tube fed shotguns. I can see the benefit of a mag fed shotgun to greatly speed up the process.
That being said, it does look like a heavy and unwieldy shotgun. Like others, I also don't understand the long mag tube on a box mag fed shotgun. Perhaps it's just for looks? I would have to handle one first before passing judgement on the concept.

I just bought a 590m and waiting my 10 days. This shotgun is perfect for me because I don't want to keep a loaded firearm in the house currently because of my 3 kids (even in a safe). I keep my ammo and guns locked up separately. This design allows me to quickly load 10 shells via magazine instead of having to load the shells 1 at a time. This is the main reason why I was hesitant in purchasing a shotgun for HD. Some will argue that I'm being overly cautious but it works for me.
On a side note... I also think it looks pretty badass! |

After learning how to manage rounds for a shotgun I have no problem loading one on the run. Plus that you can select the type of ammo you need to shoot at a given target.
This box magazine locks you into whatever is in the mag. You can't do a switch to a slug if needed and that is one of the primary actions in the Defensive Shotgun Manual of Arms, and also is the reason why a shotgun is so versatile. Also, and I asked this before, if you run the gun dry can you port load it? If you can't, it is useless , cuz you will eventually run it dry, and if you don't have another mag or it is already empty too,,, You're screwed. Randy.

I was told by the salesman that I would be able to port load a shell into the 590m. I'll find out for sure tomorrow when I bring one home. If I can't port load I'll be pretty upset. I'll try to add some pictures tomorrow
*also, I'm planning on putting different shells into different mags (labeled) so I have the option of changing loads. The only problem is, the mags are so darn expensive! Last edited by MGR; 05-03-2018 at 4:29 PM.. |

Im gonna take a guess that the aftermarket will be pumping out much cheaper mags soon

Open safe, grab shotgun rack slide. Not a chance for a ND until the gun is fully under your control. But to unlock the safe, grab your shotgun, select whichever marked mag you think you need and insert the mag and rack the pump....all this being done under stress..the stress you have when you think you need a gun. Mind you your family may be in the house and they need to be controlled too. Your responsible for all of this in a HD situation. Fantasy land. Ever tried to insert a rock in mag on a AK under the stress of a countdown timer? How about an AR under someone's about kill you stress? The less steps the better for any HD scenario. I commend you for wanting to mitigate any chance for mishaps with your kids and storing you guns as you see fit, but your justification for this as a HD shotgun seams a bit misguided or poorly thought out. Now as a "hey this is badass I'm gonna get it" gun, totally understand. |

As time goes by and my wife and I feel more comfortable with guns in the house, I'm sure the restrictions will become more liberal. But currently I don't want to risk one of my kids somehow getting their grubby curious hands on my weapons and hurting themselves. 10 seconds is worth the peace of mind but I know a lot can happen in 10 seconds during a home invasion. It's a tough balancing act between daily risk and being ready to defend your family quickly. But I do agree with you that I purchased the 590m for more of the badassness but the detachable mag works in our household defense setup. Now to make sure a cartridge can be loaded via port when the mag is spent. *I forgot to mention that since I don't have any training on a shotgun besides shooting a friend's a few times, my HD option (until I become proficient) is my 1911 which I have over 20 hours of range time this year. I just picked up the 590m. You are able to port load this shotgun but the mag needs to stay attached or the shell will fall out the bottom where the mag attaches to the receiver. There is no functional magazine tube... It's only there for the forend to function. I noticed that the action arms connected to the forend are about an inch longer than a regular 590 so the pull is way too long. Going to need to get a shorter stock.
