STEYR SSG 04 --- accurate ? --- anybody shoot one ?
I have a chance to purchase a like-new Steyr SSG 04 rifle. I have handled Steyr rifles before and they appear well-made to me. I also love the feel of their 2-stage trigger.
However, I have never shot one and I do not know anyone who owns one. So ... is there anyone out there who has experience with an SSG 04 rifle? Any thoughts, comments or suggestions? I will primarily just shoot it from a bench and will go out to about 600 yards. I do not participate in any competitions -- Maybe one day though. This one is .308 with the 24" barrel and, like I said, it has barely been used. Thanks |

Every Steyr SSG I've ever shot (and owned) were/are very accurate. This is from the first SSG model they made all the way through to the current SSG 04 rifles. Only ones I haven't tried are the new 08 models. You will be very satisfied if you get one.

SSG's are very nice rifles. If these actions are like the originals from the early 80's with pressed in barrels, and you shoot it out (5-7K rounds??), it will be difficult, and $$, to re-barrel.

Another way is to cut old barrel and bore/thread the pressed in shank to an arbitrary thread and machine new barrel to fit. Not cookie cutter work like a Remington or Winchester.

Is the barrel pressed and pinned like an AK? Is there room to thread the reciever? It would seem that if you bored out the old barrel and cut threads in the barrel shank that the press fit would be lost by thinning out the barrel.

Most of that type euro barrels seem to last longer than traditional American ones, so maybe it won't be so bad. If it were mine, I would send it back rather than try to have it otherwise done and ruin the value and maybe the accuracy. |

I spoke to a rep at Steyr and he said the "SSG 04" barrels/receivers are threaded and the barrels can be replaced fairly easily.
He indicated the "69" models are the ones that are more difficult to re-barrel. Last edited by Bungi; 04-27-2018 at 6:59 AM.. |

Steyr puts an electrode in the receiver's bore. The electrode is energized. As it heats up it expands the receiver's bore. The electrode is removed. The barrel tenon and receiver's bore are aligned in a jig. The barrel tenon is inserted into the receiver. The receiver cools and grips the barrel tenon very tightly. How do you get the cam gear off of a crankshaft after it was slid on at 400+ degrees?

I am way out of my league here ... Admittedly.
However, assuming the receiver is threaded, as the Steyr rep stated ... Would it even be possible for the barrel to also be press fitted / heat treated ?? I believe the heat / press fitting pertains to the SSG 69 models, but possibly not to the SSG 04 models. Randall: If the SSG 04 model is threaded, would you be able to re-barrel it when that time comes ?? Thanks Last edited by Bungi; 04-26-2018 at 5:57 PM.. |

I understand the skepticism. However, the fellow at Steyr that I spoke to sounded quite "mature" and experienced. Overall, he struck me as well informed.
But I agree that he could be mistaken. It woluld be nice to know for sure before buying the "04" rifle. |

The 04's and 08's are threaded. I can rebarrel the 04's and 08's.

If you can find one get a chance to try the double trigger version. I really love that double trigger.

Didn't the OP said he is not into competition shooting?
So why is everybody talking about rebarreling a new gun? Why don't we look at the possibility of him actually ever shooting the barrel out of that gun in his lifetime. First you are not going to shoot out a Steyr .308 Barrel in 5 to 7000 rounds. More like 10-12,000 if that. And the likelihood of 99% of the SSG owners ever shooting one that much is slim to none. The .308 cartridge is not particularly hard on barrel throats, and especially if loaded to sane levels and whereas I can see a guy who is into Long Range Comps actually shooting enough to wear out a barrel, the average guy is never going to shoot that gun even 1000 rounds, let alone 10 times that much. Why don't we talk about how nice the actions are on those guns and the very nice double set triggers, and the Inherent Accuracy of these fine guns which were designed to be out of the box Sniper Rifles For European Police Agencies. I have shot 5 of these guns going back to the 1980's and all of them were sub MOA out of the box with just about any Factory Ammo you fed them. I have never seen any gun with the name Steyr on it that was anything short of excellent. I'd say if you don't have to pay a fortune for it,,, go for it! My .02 Randy

I have one in 300WM with s Sightron S3 scope and it shoots very well. The trigger is predictable and crisp. The only advice I would give is to be careful when cleaning. There is a floating ring the bolt locks into. If you rotate that ring the bolt won't seat and you will make up all sorts of four letter words! Ask me how I know...
