9th anniversity, San Jose newbies' event
Hello, Calguns folk,
This isn't just another of the usual boring event reminders.........its an invitation, we'll be celebrating the 9th birthday of our little San Jose 2nd Saturday newbies event at the old San Jose range. That event actually began right here on this page, with the question put out in March of 2009 as to whether a 'bay area newbies' range event, with an emphasis on a 'friendly and welcoming ambiance' would be of any interest to the local folks. The question got a few responses, and we met at the range in March, deciding to put on the first event on the 2nd Saturday in April, as an experiment. (another range event had closed down, leaving the 2nd Saturdays open time at the range, which we could get if we had a worthwhile program to use the time before some other group asked for it.) Over the years, the event became a success, attracting a wonderful volunteer crew, and 'running at capacity' for the last several years, providing the most basic of firearms safety and proficiency training event for literally thousands of newbies.........only the most basic and simple introduction to firearms, to be sure, but 'better than nothing'............Interestingly, a number of the newbies went on to become 'gun freaks' in their own right, some of whom help with the event now. Some of them 'apprenticed' in range management, went through the formal training, and are now helping with the range operation for the public access hours. Is there anyone here, these days, who remembers this page, in March '09, and the initial discussions as to whether such an event would be desirable? Are any of the folks who volunteered to help with the first few of these events still here? Remember, the event starts at 1400 (2PM), Saturday, April 14th, at the old San Jose 10th st. range. (The range is the tiny building just south of the huge ice skating rink at 10th and Alma......easy to miss, but there is a sign out front.) cheers Carla Last edited by Asphodel; 04-02-2018 at 5:49 PM.. |

Way to go Carla for keeping this up. I can't believe it's been 9 years since it began. First and only time I've brought a pie to a shooting range! Good times and memories. Regards, Mike |

It was really good at the beginning. My both daughters and wife learnt to shoot there. Carla is the best!
Unfortunately the building is too small, the crowd is too big, you have to wait hours for your turn, stopped going there a couple of years ago. But it was great. |

I came to the SJ Newbie Event with my sister. It was lots of fun. I came by initially to encourage my sister to shoot more. I made lots of friends, shot lots (and lots) of ammo, brought pie (Pie Shoot!), helped bbq, donated my time and knowledge, donated 22LR ammo, provided shooting stuff, and had a great time. I'm so busy nowadays, I need to make time to return.
