I tried making a paint can forge
The build went fine, but using just a propane torch doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere.....just doesn't get hot enough. I'm going to have to go find a brake drum and a blow-dryer and see if I can put something better together :-)

I have one like this my dad must have bought 50 years ago. Mine doesn't have the shield and the blower is mounted to the forge.

Get some fire bricks from your local supplier....make sure they are fire rated or they could explode and kill something you love. Get a black steel pipe and cap from your local hardware store....steer clear of anything galvanized or you could have serious health problems with zinc oxide poisoning... black steel pipe. drill the desired amount of holes 1 inch apart.
get a shop vac hose and a blow dryer and some mesquite charcoal. I lay the bricks on the ground providing a channel to fit the pipe....then make a little house out of the bricks around it. side wall and back walls are important...a roof is not since you need to manage the coals and make sure the heat is even. I used a vacuum attachment to affix to the pipe and it sealed perfectly...I used 100 mph on the other end of the hose to attach the blow dryer. |

I know this is kinda old (maybe irrelevant to OP, but maybe worthwhile to future readers), but I successfully melted iron in a home forge when I was about 16. We used Kingsford charcoal and a hair dryer on high.

I've been using a mapp torch and 4 soft fire bricks. Hot enough to shape metal and heat treat, not hot enough to weld.
I want to make an induction forge, and probably something charcoal.
