These charts are handy. Does anyone know how many 223 cases fit in a 5 gallon Behr paint bucket? 9mm? 40 S&W? 45 ACP? Coffee cans are just too small
I think I recall a 5 gallon bucket of mixed brass weighing around 70 pounds, but I could be a bit off.

Thanks for the helpful info. I've been storing excess brass in 5 gallon paint buckets for deep storage. Anyone know the brass count or weight of a full 5 gallon bucket full of popular pistol and rifle brass cases? I don't have a large enough scale to weigh my buckets.

A 5 gallon Orange Home Depot Bucket weighs 1 pound 10.6 ounces.
Use the charts above and add in 1 lbs of brass until bucket / bowl / coffee can is full. Not perfect but you should be able to get pretty close to the wieght. I cant believe I posted this / I cant believe people asked Dad use to tell me "Son Common Sence is so rare if should be a F$#KEN superpower".

If you use 1gal ziplock freezer bags to store your brass, each (full) bag contains:
9mm, 15.6#, 1836cases 40s&w, 12.2#, 1219cases 45acp, 11.4#, 890cases 223, 11#, 809cases or if you use the 5gal bucket method 9MM = 8500-9000 pieces .40 S&W = 7000-7500 pieces .45 ACP = 3800-4000 pieces 9mm, 59.46gr/ea, 117.7cases/#, 8.5#/1000 38spl, 68.06gr/ea, 102.8cases/#, 9.7#/1000 40s&w, 70.1gr/ea, 99.9cases/#, 10#/1000 .357mag, 78.3gr/ea, 89.4cases/#, 11.2#/1000 .45acp, 89.58gr/ea, 78.1cases/#, 12.8#/1000 .223, 95.28gr/ea , 73.5cases/#, 13.6#/1000 .44mag, 114.38gr/ea, 61.2cases/#, 16.3#/1000 50bmg, 865.26gr/ea, 8.1cases/#, 123.5#/1000 All weights are uncleaned fired cases with the primer remaining. Individual case weights were derived using an average of mixed brass weights (except 50bmg) So, if you picked up 8#?s of 45 brass: 8# X 78.1cases/# = 625 cases+/-

From my calculations
270 win, 5 cases 1034.6gn so 1 lb is 34 cases.

I weighed 1000 5.56 .223 mixed brass and it came out to 14.3lbs. used a refrigerant scale that i weigh all my ebay packages with.
maybe its because the 5.56 are thicker brass. .07lbs is a small variance in 1000 mixed cases. |

i added 5.56 to the list too

I would suppose the 5.56 vs the .223 weights pretty much answer the questions re loading.
I read an article somewhere stating the volumes held by these two are identical. I don't know how that could be unless the 5.56 is denser somehow. Assuming the weights listed are correct of course, one would have to take into account the differences when working up loads. Thank you OP for taking the time to follow up on your og post. |
