At final issuance, you'll provide certification of training on each gun to be placed on the license. Choices are not final until that interview. I listed no guns on my initial application, and submitted the information for three with training certs at the final interview.

Broke down and E-mailed Amber asking about the Live Scan results, got the 120 days response just like I thought that I would.

Back to waiting I guess!!

My first renewal is coming up in February and I have a few questions....

How soon can I make my appointment?
Do I have to get approved all over again? Do I have to Livescan again?

Is it two appointments like for initial issuance, or just one?

None of this was clear on the SSD website.

Thanks for any responses.

Odd coincidence. Very often, after an applicant calls Amber Wong at the Sac Sheriff CCW office, regarding a delayed application, an approval email appears. This is predicated on average wait times (70-ish days) being complete and no interfering holidays (they were closed on Monday) and some other factors (including being nice when you call).

No statistical correlation or causation, but it happens.

Sure, but "70-ish days" means "120 days".

Did you already do your Live Scan? That meaning that you have already recieved the initial approval from the Sherrif.

If you have already done the Live Scan then I would say get the CCW Training that includes the Range part of it as well. That way when your Live Scan comes in you will be GTG.

I took mine here, http://cordovashootingcenter.com/sacramento-gun-store/

Usually a Saturday and Sunday 8 hours each day. Pretty good for the most part and learned a lot about the ins and outs of Carry.

That's because they don't publish it. . But the appointment system has allowed scheduling 60 days out.

Sacramento Gun Club...indoor, nice range, instructor taught for CDCR for a decade or more.
California Security Training Academy...focus is in Guard Training...lower costs, competent staff.

When you check on prices, make sure you understand who pays for range fees, targets and ammo. Some agencies (CSTA) advertise they will and don't. Also, determine what kind of training you want. If you are proficient and simply want to qualify, CSTA does it cheaply. If you want to enhance your shooting and work through scenarios with live fire, then Lagomarsino is well thought of.

I've been through two renewals, and a weapon change on my permit. You'll be able to make a renewal appointment a couple months in advance. There are plenty of options available. Most recently (January of 2015), they were doing renewals just a couple days per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, if I recall).

No Livescan is required, and you don't go through the same approval process. Much more simple process.

Basically, you show up for your appointment, submit your renewal app, payment, and utility bill (reconfirming residence), and wait to get called back. You'll meet with someone who will spend a couple minutes with you, take copies of your training/qualification certificates, and will ask you about any LE contacts during the past 2 years. Assuming you haven't been arrested, they'll give you a green light, and you'll walk out with your new permit in hand.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Ironically, CSTA utilizes SGC's facility for their CCW and BSIS firearms qualifications even though SGC has their own instructors for CCW. I believe they used to utilize The Gun Range off of Watt.

After seeing several of the CSTA quals and patrons that attend, I have a very strong fear that these people were certified to carry firearms. It is definitely scary. I've seen a handful of what I would consider as responsible firearms enthusiasts amongst them. Majority were either mall ninja commandos or flat out appeared to be their first time shooting, EVER!

I agree that CSTA does it cheap. Whether or not you want to be around the other participants with live firearms or even associated with the organization is up to personal choice.

Senior management and control of the CSTA has changed in the last year to include the addition of a retired Sacramento Sheriff Deputy as an instructor. Competent, but, meh. His training is anecdotal "war stories", his advice includes carrying mace and a knife, he talks about how he intervened in an assault, stopping traffic and drawing down on a fist fight. Oh, and every third word is an "F-Bomb". I sat through the whole mess in my "cooperate and graduate" mode.

CSTA used to use the Mangan Range exclusively until it was shut down. Now they "vagabond" around. I renewed with them at the Gun Room in Elk Grove. Found a spent .45 jacketed slug on the floor in my shooting stall. Haven't returned.

CSTA is the only organization I've seen not qualify a customer. Three months later, I was at SGC and a horde of CSTA students came in. The previously-failed individual was with them and looked no more confident or capable. I left.

But they are inexpensive.

If you're competent, safe, and experienced, CSTA might be ok because they're cheap and you get 50 rounds of ammo and the range fees are covered in the cost. Works for me.

But I agree with the others, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near most of the ppl in those classes. One person was racking the slide and her mag fell out. Yikes...and then my head exploded when they said she was there for a requal of her security exposed firearm permit. Wow!

Anyway, CSTA is cheap and accessible for those who're experienced and just want to get the formal stuff out of the way. If you're new, avoid it like the plague. You won't learn a thing about CCW. It's confusing as hell especially since they teach exposed firearm permit for guards and CCW in the same class at the same time. So you learn about all kinds of irrelevant things. Plus it's all story time. Believe me, it's a really strange experience.

I understand that Art and Ian are no longer there. Ken is back, and Phil also comes up for some of the classes.

I say Wes at lfiguns.com
No nonsense and extremely well qualified. F-ups can get you booted and are not ignored. Can be very humbling to say the least. Safety, safety, safety! Fantastic advice always provided and worth pondering. Wealth of shooting and LEO experience. Won't take any shortcuts just so you can get your prized paper ticket. Serious stuff. Worth the price IMO.
