Default Homemade gun rack

Ok, first off, it's not done and second, I didn't build it. I gave my neighbor the drawings and dimensions and he built it today.

I was tired of seeing my guns looking like this in my safe:

Based on some racks I"d seen on the web, I drew up plans for this:

Why 2 pieces you ask? Well, my safe is 16" wide with 1" jambs. So without having to remove the top shelf to slip the stand in, we split it into 2, so that I can still access the revolver in the back.

I still have to stain/paint and put the felt on. But you get the idea.

What's that empty slot on the far left for? Oh, that's for Mr. Baer when he comes in........

Yes, I just noticed the hammer cocked, without the safety being on, on the Kimber, my bad. It's fixed now, I just didn't want to retake the pics.

Nice!
You're motivating me to get going on the safe remodel.
I want to build drawers just tall enough so I can lay them out.

I love the simplicity and practicality of it. I bent some 1/4" steel rods to make handgun hangers and covered it with heat shrink. Works well also.

congrats on solving a problem that actually exists. i prefer to lay my handguns out flat on the shelving that is provided inside the safe. however, i've pushed the envelope with space and am considering a setup such as yours; either that, or constructing an additional shelf to enhance handgun storage potential.

Thanks, but I have some thick grey felt to cover the slots and where the mags hit.

Default Update 12/28

Finally got sometime today to put the felt on the racks. Truth be told, I covered them last weekend but had to peel it all off. Why you ask? Well, when I measured the thickness of the slides and cut the slots, I didn't factor in the thickness of the felt . So after covering them, it was a wee bit of a struggle to get the guns in their slots, that's if they even fit, which a few didn't. So with the help of a dremel, I shaved the slots and I also took a 1/2" off the top of the rack to make putting them in a little easier so voila'...finished racks.

By all means, they ain't perfect, but they're functional!

Thanks for sharing Skosh. Is that Home Depot felt? How did you attach it? What kind of adhesive?

I actually got the felt at a local arts and crafts shop, Beverly's in Concord. A 9" x 12" piece is only $0.29 ea. or you can buy it buy it in bulk starting at a 1/4 yd. I used 3M Spray Glue 77, which can be bought at Home Depot.

The hardest part was trying to figure out how to lay the felt into the slots so that it looked like "one piece". I ended up folding the edges of the main piece into the slots as best as possible and then gluing a runner strip that goes the whole length of the top over the folded in edges.

But remember, if you do it this way, you have to account for the doubled thickness of the felt, so make your slots wide enough the first time...LOL.

I made an "L" shape with the wood like you. Except i put metal rods in and put the rubber covering liquid stuff on them (double dipped). Now the rod goes into the barrel and holds them up. I found I could get a few more pistols on the wood that way. My guns are close to each other, I have to be careful pulling them out.

Great job. The only thing that would make that better would to use a router to make slots for the butts of the pistols.

Looks good, OP!
