You do what you can live with I guess.
A woman screaming for help? and it's pretty clear what's going on when you go to help? and the bad guy goes for you? Seems fairly clear to me.

"The man fired one round at the suspect, hitting him in the chest. The suspect later died at a hospital."

Must have been one of those high tech 9mm modern ammo rounds.

I agree - being a retired firefighter (35 years) I have been to many a crazy scene - sometimes you think one person is a bad guy and it turns out very different - I can only imagine a LEO's experience - Now once the BD comes at you - that makes it very different - still this scenario comes up in every CCW class....

I am really hoping the CCW person here makes out ok

From the article, sounds like a clean shoot. The aggressor was no angel, sounds like had what was coming to him.

Probably true.

That being said, I couldn't live with the guilt of knowing that I could have helped the woman and something happened to her.

That's why you purchase CCW insurance...

Possibly.... but note in the article
Quote:
Police Capt. Ned Jackson said it appears the suspect was unarmed at the time, but several felony warrants had been issued for his arrest.

Jackson didn't think the shooter would face charges but said the investigation is ongoing.
My emphasis

This is Utah, not suit happy Kalifornia. Even if the bad guy's family sued - I doubt a jury would convict (based on the article).

If it were here - yeah, could & would likely get sued, and worst - dead bad guy's family would likely win.

IMHO.

most times dead guy's family is gonna sue no matter what the circumstances... shouldn't change your moral or legal stance.

If you don't want to be sued - don't ever shoot anyone. Otherwise, it's just part of our litigious society (happens in all walks of life, not just shootings)... and of course, it doesn't mean they will win the suit.

My buddy had a similar situation, perp leaving bank with knife in hand and a stolen purse from inside. Yelling, yelling, yelling stop that man. Knife ended up being no match for a Black Belt in Karate, perp hit the deck, hit his head on concrete, coma, dead in a few days. No charges, no lawsuit.

Was a few decades ago.

1) it's UT

2) 'use of a gun' posts usually go to General Guns.

There is no value at all complaining or analyzing or reading tea leaves to decide what these bills really mean or actually do; any bill with a chance to pass will be bad for gun owners.
