POST 832 PC & buying handgun
Back in 84-85, I graduated from the reserve academy. I have the certificate from that. But it doesn't state 832 on it. Can I use my old cert to buy a pistol? Or do I have to prove 832 somehow to get an exemption from the HSC?

You can get a copy of your 832 cert from your department or POST if needed. |

I just used mine to make a purchase last October. I took the class about the same time early 80's but never became a reserve. It does have to be the arrest and firearms certificate if I remember correctly and it never expires.

It doesn't ever expire. The exemption sheet only says you need to have taken the class, and does not talk about dates. I have done that once in between jobs a long time ago and just walked in to the store with a copy of my academy certificate and bought a handgun without going through the HSC crap.
The police ID gives you a different exemption than the academy certificate exemption. Then you have military exemptions, hunter safety exemptions, and a bunch of other ones... I think there are over 30 exemptions.

Is it assumed by gun stores that if you have an academy cert, you also have 832 PC?

The full academy includes a 832PC component and the stores I dealt with knew it. You might want to call ahead and confirm so you don't get hassled when you show up.

http://post.ca.gov/pc-832-arrest-and...ms-course.aspx From POST website: This training may be met by successful completion of a basic training course (e.g., Regular Basic Course, Specialized Investigators' Basic Course, and Level III Modular Format Course) or as a separate stand-alone certified course. |

The only part that is required for the exemption is the PC 832 Firearms portion. If you are able to take that course without taking the Arrest portion, that's fine. You're still exempt. I'd imagine that most of the time you'd be required by the training center to take the Arrest part before they'll allow you to take the Firearms part.

Law/Power of arrest can also be known as "PC 832 Arrest, Search, and Seizure." PC 832 used to be also be known as Level III module I. |
