San Jose Bay Area - These Gun Shops Stink!
Seriously, are there any good ones left? All I keep finding are guys trying to rip people off on pricing, or trying to up sell on way too many unnecessary items. This is the main reason I've stopped buying ammo locally! I don't want to deal with some macho ex-military idiot who thinks they know everything there is to know about everything..
That being said I'm in the market for a used 12G shotgun and would like my business to go where it will be appreciated. You would think the gun community would look after each other seeing as how we are the minority in this state. I'm 32 and I felt like ranting! lol |

I can't really blame the gun-shops for prices near MSRP, or up-selling, cost of doing business in San Jose is expensive (high-rents, state fees, etc), and a gun-shop is fundamentally a business.
Keep hitting the gun-shops and cruise the private-sales market-place, you may find your gem. |

My favorites are
Annies Guns in Fremont Templar Sports in Los Gatos Bay Area Gun Vault in Mountain View However, i've never looked for a used anything anywhere but on the FS section on Calguns.

Eddy's Shooting Sports @ 400 Moffett Blvd Ste F, Mountain View, CA 94043
is a pretty cool hole in the wall. They got 5 stars on Yelp and is why I decided to check them out. I dealt with a guy named Ricky who was real nice and friendly. I was looking for 1911's, SKS's and Mosin's. Even though he knew I wasn't going to make a purchase, he still gave me great customer service. |

yeah, gotta understand the gun stores are here as a business. they try their best...at least most of them.
they often can't compete with bigger store such as Big 5 on pricing but they are the guys that can get you the specialty guns, harder to find guns. it comes at a price but they don't have that buying power to give you an amazing price |

I have had good experience with
Reeds Sportsmans supply And yes, prices are but high everywhere. As has been said, cost of doing business in the leftist enclave of the Bay Area. Good luck.

Imbert & Smithers in San Carlos has a good selection of used shotguns, but they're a 30-minute drive north from SJ.

Sportsman's Supply has always treated me well. Small, crowded, and very little parking, but I like them.

The guys at Metal Dog on 2nd are always willing to work with me. They are fair priced based on this economy and always answer my questions without making me feel like a D.A.

How about a
Non - gun store version of a gun store.... a home-based FFL? you're lucky to have a great one in San Jose. they waste very little time/money on the accessory side (something the original OP mentioned in his post), just a small amount of more desirable types of ammo. but the main focus is on both new and used firearms... revolvers, pistols, shotguns. right now they seem to have a very nice assortment of Smith and Wesson and Ruger firearms. they have a calguns.net vendor post here. you want to look for the active one titled " guns at San Jose gun trader." Then you give them a call, set up an appointment = no more waiting in line & real one on one customer service, just like it should be. Give it a try. |

+1 for everything Sealocan stated. They can get some guns available through their distributor pretty quick as well.
They do the cheapest internet transfers i've found close to home and work. Quote:

Most gun stores have decent selection and the prices are all pretty much the same. The only gun store I will never go to again is Target Masters.

They got decent prices though. When I was looking to buy my Glock, everybody was up at the 600 mark or very close. Target masters was at 550 so I went with it. I was looking at an M1A they had too, 1450...not bad at all! Wish I had the money, I would have bought it in a heart beat.

Had they had the Benelli I wanted, I probably would buy from him as well. But as noted before, it's literally a hole in the wall; not a lot of room to roam around but it's family run and they are pretty cool. Reeds handguns are actually priced very well and during the Christmas season, some guns go on sale (clearing inventory I imagine). And for me, the important thing about both is neither Reeds nor Eddy's seems to pressure you. I've bought a gun (my SA 1911 Loaded) from Target Masters West in Milpitas about 4 years ago now, and the only thing I didn't like, aside from the inflated price, was when I went to pick it up. They made me repeat the top 5 safety rules, then made me display how to lock the cable lock, then unlock it from the gun, and how to operate the pistol. I guess it's a procedural thing, considering they are next door to the Milpitas Police Dept.. I just felt it was dumb. At Reeds, he just asked: " you know how to use the SW M&P9, right?" I nodded a yes and smiled and it was done. Just my wooden nickels worth. As far as Kerleys, I used to buy stuff ( primers, bullets, .22LR ammo, patches, etc.) from them, but never a gun. It seems their prices are just too high for firearms, and even some of their reloading parts. The owner (Henry) is the most knowledgeable. Now if you're a bow-hunter, you can try out a bow in their little indoor ( 10-15 ft. single hay bale ) lane and try a compound you like to buy.

I recommend Peter at Mount Pleasant Arms. www.mparms.com His inventory is always changing and is great to work with. Find a gun online (Also does SSE for numerous guns as well) and he will do the transfer for you. On his website it lists the vendors he works with and has good relationships with. Buy the gun, he sets up an appointment with you, and total time is about 20 mins or so combined for both filling out paperwork and pickup.

i forget the name of the shop... it was in a commercial area in Milpitas... they were selling 100 rnd boxes of WWB .45 for like $70-80
had a smith 686 on the shelf... asked it was consign, they said it was new... trigger and hammer were just covered in soot.... From what I've noticed, the bay area shops are quite a bit more expensive than the socal shops... |

Yes, Greg David revived the family business started by his Dad, and is now located on 400 Moffet Blvd in Mountain View.
A small, but really pleasant place. |

Here's a quick review of places I've been:
Eddie's Shooting Sports - Mountain View Ricky and Greg are awesome to deal with. The place is small, but they treat you with respect with no EGO , even if you're a newbie. The prices are pretty good, and will often match the lowest you can find in the bay area. J&R Sports Supply - Livermore Their prices are on the low end of the bay, and treat you like a respected customer also. No EGOs here either. Elite Armory - Castro Valley They have good customer service, but the prices are on the high side. Annie's Guns - Fremont Some people think the old guys is a bit obnoxious, but you really just need to give him a chance and talk to him and ask him questions. He's very knowledgable. Instead of selling me a rifle, he suggested I start reloading to get the accuracy out of whatever rifle I'm going to buy later. I did, and it's one of the best advices I've gotten. Also, their prices are one of the lowest in the bay. Target Masters West - Milpitas The people working there are a bit less experienced, but because of that, they don't have much EGO, and it's not much of a hassle to purchase a gun there. The great thing is that their prices are almost always the lowest in the bay area. Reed's - Santa Clara I bought my first gun there. Most people here have a ton of EGO, and seem to be impatient with newbies. The selection is good, prices are decent, but not the lowest. I would really try to avoid this place if you're a newbie. It's a buy and get out shop. Solar Tactical - Livermore They have decent customer service, but the prices are on the medium to high side. City Arms East - Pleasant Hill They have good customer service, great selection, and prices are mid range in the bay area. Tracy Rifle And Pistol Great service unless you get that 1 guy that looks grumpy all the time. Prices are Mid to Low. Great place to get SSE guns. Very nice range. Gun Fishing...etc DUBLIN Great service so far. Guns are more on the Mid to High range. Range is just ok, since they are pretty anal about picking up your own brass, and is the most expensive in the bay area. Last edited by rccar; 10-31-2014 at 6:11 PM.. Reason: Updated 2 more stores |
