Here's a tutorial written with help from bplvr (for a MKIII):

part one

part two

I'm really interested in doing one too. Especially since you can easily make them featureless!

Ill probably buy my tube/barrel/bolt stuff from I/O inc. they have everything there. but I want to do a faux silencer on mine, like the special forces version so I can hide most of the barrel. hopefully to OAL will be sufficient.

It's Indianapolis Ordnance not I.O. Inc.

http://www.indianapolisordnance.com/

And yes their parts are really good.

Use the Indianapolis Ordnance semi kit- it's the only one that works right.

You want a bit of a funnel shape for the feed ramp too so it can feed the bullets smoothly, and you'll probably want to polish or smoothen up the bolt face as well.

APEX has loop stocks.
When I have a chance I have STEN parts to get posted on the web site, stocks are in that mix.
One delay, my advertising guy "lost" about 150 images in his APPLE workstation!
We have tech support in next week to recover them.

No I meant the receiver & barrel parts. Are all 3 models relatively compatible as far as building them up?

Your question about STEN loop stocks reminded me that we have them.
When I initially viewed the STEN part set shipment I selected the "T" stocks as they were what I saw the most of.
Until I get the listings up you can ask for the loop stock in the "comment" section of the invoice or call the sales office.
The Sales Office will be open again on Tuesday.
Until I discuss this matter with Jeff I am unsure if there will be an added cost for the STEN Loop Stock.

As an added note, I had a customer ask if the loop stock will fit a STEN MK5, and the answer is yes.

Bolts are likely the same.
The rear half of the guns are also real similar.
The mk2 & mk5 seem similar in how the magazine tower attached over the main receiver tube and in how the barrel nut holds the barrel in place.
The mk3 receiver is longer and the barrel is retained differently.
I believe that the mk3 magazine feed tower is welded directly to the receiver tube so its not possible to fold the gun flat for storage.

About the original full-auto bolts in the STEN's.
The bolts used in the MK2 & MK3 will not work in the MK5 SMG.
However, the bolt for MK5 will work in MK2 & MK3 SMG's.

The MK5 has its fire control parts moved forward.
That is how they get the grip in.
Also, the stamped steel cover for the MK5 fire control parts is shorter than is used on the MK2 & MK3.

There is no feedramp besides what you machine into the back of the barrel.
The kits don't come with barrels so you have to make a barrel anyways...

The sten mags put the cartridge most of the way aligned with the chamber as the cartridge is pushed out of the magazine.
I believe that sten mag will fit 45acp with slight work, mostly opening up the lips.
At that point, it's really just a matter of making a proper bolt with the extractor moved out the appropriate amount and the bolt face opened up.
You could likely do that by simply making a different extractor.

I was think there would need to be a lot more weight added to the bolt

Maybe so.
No problem, just make the bolt heavier and slightly extend the receiver tube to accommodate the extra length.
If you are going to make your own bolt for compliance reasons, it's no problem to re-design it to fit the 45.

I think a .40 or .45 caliber STEN would be a very neat project to see.
When we first got the L2A3 Sterling kits up some interesting guns were made from them too.

If you are re-designing the gun anyways, design it to work with greasegun mags...
It can't be too hard to fabricate a feed tower to fit greasegun mags.

Sterling mags would be better if you could get them to feed. Another option that the Chinese used was to convert the Stens to 7.62x25 and use PPS-43 magazines.

Also if you look into the AR15 FCG builds to will see that they use a new bolt. As for weight without adding additional length you could probably slug the bolt with a Tungsten-Carbide weight and/or a different spring rate.
