The FASTEST 22LR ON EARTH any good? (Aguila Super Maximum)
Hey all,
I was wondering if anybody here has tried the Aguila Super Maximum 22LR ammo, billed as the fastest 22lr ever made (30 grain hp or round nose bullet at 1750 fps). The reason i ask is because i just bought a brick at cabelas for $42 (comes with a sweet dry storage box). Research on the internet yielded mixed reviews. The most concerning of which, was that 600-800 hyper velocity rounds or so ruined some guy's nice after market bull barrel on his 10/22. Now Im wondering if my new marlin 795 can handle it Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks in advance! Btw, I'm new to shooting, so forgive any noob errors. |

I don't think it will be a problem. I am interested in how that barrel was ruined by this ammo.

I have shot some in various guns, worked fine. I'm not sure if Marlin says not to use HYPER velocity ammo out of that gun. Read the manual or call them. I was told by Ruger not to use stingers/hyper velocity ammo out of my Ruger MKII.

I can't tell you how "good" it is. But, I can tell you that the top of the line .22lr target ammo is all subsonic stuff! Faster doesn't always mean better. On the other hand, I highly doubt that 500 rounds of it will ruin a decent barrel.

It won't ruin a barrel but it will (eventually) tear up the recoil buffer in a Marlin semi. Says right in the owners manual that you aren't to use hyper velocity ammo in a Marlin 795.
Save them for a bolt gun. I have fired them and really can't tell the difference except they don't seem to be very accurate. Best to stick with Mini Mags. -greg

thanks for the replies. i've read about subsonic being better for accuracy, and I understand that. I'm just a sucker for claims like "fastest ammo available (for 22lr)" so I had to buy some. That said, my purpose for this ammo is to just plink for fun and see what damage it does.
Edit: Thanks for the info Jagguy, I dont have my rifle in hand yet so i didnt get a chance to see the manual. Last edited by penchf; 07-24-2009 at 2:42 PM.. |

I'd suggest shooting it in a good bolt, pump, lever, rolling block or break open action instead of letting it beat the crap out of your semi. If you want to have some fun, use this to make fruit salad with. I bet it does wonders on small apples, grapes, oranges, etc. @ 50 yards. |

the factory recoil spring is not designed for hyper velocity rounds. You might get away with it IF you find aftermarket heavier springs to replace the stock one. But stock, not in the 795.

I would imagine that this ammo would be good for hunting. Higher velocity equals greater impact energy.
+1 on not using it in a semi-auto.

Great on ground squirrels
This Aguila Super Maximum makes mincemeat out of ground squirrels. It is far more potent than a high velocity (e.g., blazer, 1200 fps) round.
I shot tons of it through my 10/22 (with an aftermarket recoil buffer) without any ill effects. |

Either way, it seems like I'll be holding off on shooting the stuff, which is fine. I see another 22lr in my future anyways maybe a golden 39a or some bolt action |
