Very, very impressive, bringing that rifle back from the mess that Century made of it. It looks beautiful.

I'm usually not a supporter of any C&R refinish, however this one I support. The BBQ bed liner stock covering was an abomination, and a C&R crime!!!....
Great job...It looks 100% better... My only question is, did you leave enough room in the stock for the piston to reciprocate??? The original finish of the wood on the Vz52 and Vz 52/57 had a greenish tint to it. I have one of the unissued "Grenada" guns. I was there when it was taken out of it's crate....

Now THAT is what a restoration is supposed to be, not "I stripped the shellac on my mosin because I didn't like it and don't understand what restoration actually means"
It still won't be original again, but it's 100x better now than it was. Good job OP.

Is the green tint from the long term cosmoline exposure.. sort of like the greenish tint on parking from long term cosmoline.

I don't think the color comes from exposure to any type of preservative. These came out of the crates looking just as it does in my pics... I think it was just the color of the finish when it was originally applied....
As to the question of "where"....I've been collecting for over 35 years, and have made many contacts all over the country so i've had the opportunity to look at quite a number of beautiful collections, and sometimes buy or trade a piece or two... Back in the pre internet days... contacts were everything. This particular rifle was bought sight unseen as the seller was a reputable contact I had done business with before. I traveled back east to pick it up, and be present when the cases were opened.....We all were giggling uncontrollably when the lids were popped on the cases....... Great times with some great guys....

OP - looks great!
I have a handful, but only one with the black crinkle coat - never been brave enough to try removing it. Thanks for the write-up.

We went through the same process with our VZ52. It had the bedliner coating. The wood on ours looks darker, except the upper hand guard which is a different kind of wood than the rest of the stock. We weren't sure what kind of finish it should have so I think we just rub BLO on it.
We have fired the gun and have had some issues with the casings sticking in the breech. My son found it in a gun store in Spokane when he was stationed there.

Nice job Gleam, very nice!
It's a PITA to take pics when your hands are covered in stripper, Hoppes, BLO, etc. That's the main reason I only get pics of maybe one in 6 or 7 that I do. Good job with the process documentation, shows how much work goes into the restoration. |
