Default Sly Park

How is Sly Park at this time for plinking? Is it a mud hole?

I went 3 weeks ago and that was right after a good 2 day rain.. The roads are fine it's just several of the shooting pockets have a big puddle in the way.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1397280032.473438.jpg

My Xterra got through, a civic kinda car you'd probably have to hike the short distance.

Go 50 east towards Tahoe, exit Sly Park and go right several miles towards the lake. Hang a left onto Mormon Immigrant Trail, go over 2 dams and continue on. Eventually you will come across a long stretch of straight road and see 2 turnoffs on the right... Take the second one Bonetti road and continue for 2-3 miles. There'll be plenty of pockets on the left and right sides of the road to shoot into the hillside.

Best description I've read of how to get there. There have been some comical ones on here from time to time.

Don't spread the word too much about the location, though :-). It's still a nice little secret for locals

I bought my cabin up there before even knowing about it. Just the icing on the cake. I'm only 5 minutes from it, and was a really pleasant surprise.

I agree, that it seemed like some of the directions were purposely bad to turn people off from going there.

Lucky guy! I've discussed this with a few other guys but haven't had an exact answer yet.. Do you know where the huge clearing is in the far back woods of Bonetti road that offers several hundred yard shots?

That spot hasn't been a secret in a long time.

So true, you can tell by all the mess other shooters leave out there. I use to love to ride and shoot out there but got tired of cleaning up everyone else's trash from shooting.

Make sure you clean your mess up though... last summer I came through there coming back from Capps Crossing and saw a range cleanup in progress. The people cleaning were the prius crowd along with USFS LEO. In other words, shooting messes up there are surely being documented.

Weekend warriors seem to take more time loading up targets that are usually old appliances as well as TV's and Old Monitors. Take them there, shoot them up and then go home. That's why it is so dirty in many spots up there. I would think that it would take a 10 wheel dump a couple of loads to clean most of the stuff. It's a shame to see what happens when shooters don't clean up after themselves.

Cant find any place further then 100 yards out there. Most are 20-60 yards but good place to shoot and please, PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF AND OTHERS!

Legend has it that there is a huge clearing free of trees that offers several hundred yards. I'll be looking for it next time I'm up.

My Xterra got through, a civic kinda car you'd probably have to hike the short distance.
Be careful... That's pretty close to what I would call shooting down a roadway. Which is illegal, just like standing trees and water.

It is very sad that so many leave all their garbage up there.
There is a program called PLINK, to promote responsible use of National Forest and other Public Lands for recreational shooting. They do so by going to shooting areas and cleaning up after irresponsible shooters and leaving signs to Please Leave It NRA Klean. Major thanks to Steve Morgan for organizing this forest clean-up program.

Around the 5 mile mark there are some 150 yard spots. Or just keep driving until you make your way to happy valley, just watch out for them local boys

Awesome guys glad to hear it went well! How was the shooting? I always thought the second road was Bonetti and I've always shot several miles down that road.

Consumnes Mine has some decent 250+ Yard Spots. Just clean up after yourself and use steel targets.

Hey guys,

I'm planning on going up to Sly Park tomorrow..unfortunately don't know what time yet either morning or afternoon. Waiting on my friend's gf to give him the green light.

We'll be shooting some steel targets, hope to see others out there!

This time I explored a little and went 2 miles passed Bonetti rd and turned right onto Snow Mill Rd. Found a clearing that offered about 200 yards. Also even on this Saturday that road was not nearly as crowded as Bonetti.

After first shot I immediately realized that my ears weren't on lol
