An associate installed a very small luggage GPS tracker into a void in the stock in one of his rifles; some time later, it was stolen by thieves who used a rotary saw to open his RSC. He was able to direct the police to its location for a recovery. This might be something for consideration for select weapons.

Thumb print works for me but must be destroyed after a curtain amount of time

Maybe or the thumb print is held with the ID and when you return the rentals and get your ID they also give you your thumb print back .

install mobile GPS tracking devices in all your rentals. get an ID card reader to verify ID cards or require 2 forms of legit ID for new shooters. inspect all outgoing bags.

send an email to local news stations alerting them with picture of perp.

hope this gets resolved

Magnetic strip in firearm something like retail stores have for security to prevent walk outs of un-payed for items.

Could be a solution to the problem IMO.

Better a theft than another suicidal jerk. The gun was insured and can be replaced.

He doesn't look like the type that will post on armslist or even knows what that it

IMO, he's the type that will ask around with his buddies if he knows someone who is willing to pay cash for a rifle, no dros no nothing.

Have a serial #? Will keep an eye out for Any one with that neck tattoo and face

Honestly, this is... Unlikely.

I was working at a 7/11 a while back, and one night a fellow comes in and robs the place with a m91/30 (seriously.)

He... Didn't do a good job of it. Our cameras caught his face, tattoos on his arms and his license plate as he drove off. We even had some of our regulars identify the fellow by name. But... No arrest was made. The report was filed and all the evidence was handed over but that was it.

One of the officers who would stop by and hang out every now and again (police got free fountain drinks and pizza) said that they would have it on file and tack on the charges if/when they arrested the man on something unrelated.

He threatened the life of our night-shift worker and made off with nearly a grand in cash and goods (mostly in cigarettes, he damn near cleared us) and walked. I don't think this would be any different.

I've never rented a gun but I'm a little surprised that some ranges still do...after some range rental suicides.

When I first learned of the availability of rental guns, I thought, "Hmmm...wouldn't it be easy to just walk away with it?

Dumbass stole from AO Sword several items off the floor and stuffed them in his pants. He comes back to the SAME STORE several days later and sticks around while the employees chat him up. Several employees recognized him from store security footage. Store called the police, officers walked in and cuffed him while he was still at the counter. He also admitted to stealing the SCAR from the gun range while in cuffs. Sounds like a real mental giant.

Well as far as the suicide thing goes, many ranges have a policy that they won't rent you a gun unless you have a friend with you or you brought in at least one of your own.

But as far as the rental policies go, most ranges I've been to simply require a drivers license to rent a gun. So a fake ID and a busy day at the range and it wouldn't be too hard to slip out with one. Maybe one of those alarmed scanner systems that you seen in retail stores would help some. Just an idea.
