Someone Talk me out of an AR pistol
Hey ya'll. Ive got the bug and I really want to build a 10.5 AR pistol. Im doing my research and I want to do a KISS build. I have the money to run down to Riflegear and DROS a lower. Someone talk some sense into me.

Build what you want, it's good for the economy!
That being said, if you want talked out of it I can add this; When I lived in AZ I impulse bought a bushmaster AR pistol. It was shorter than the 10.5 build you want to do. WAY too much fireball and not really practical for much. If I could do it again I'd spend the money on another 1911. Again, build what you like! You can NEVER have too many project guns |

NO! do it! waste your money and boost the economy and have there be one more evil black gun out there to piss off the Brady Campaign. If a GLOCK is evil, an AR pistol is the Devil!
stop looking to the internet to tell you everything you should do.....sack up and just do what you want!!!!!

Sorry in a semi-related question would it be possible to get an AR pistol on a CCW since theoretically it's a "pistol".

They are utterly impractical, and a bit trickier to get running perfectly, compared to regular ARs. They aren't nearly as accurate as a longer barrel AR. Pointless for anything but just blasting away at a target.
And yes I have one, and no, I am not selling it. |

Are you Roster-exempt? Curious only because you mention building a pistol from a lower DROSed from Riflegear (I'm assuming not PPTed).

I have the Spike's 'Concussion' 7.5" barrel pistol. It's so much fun it should be illegal! humongous fireballs with 62 grain 5.56, recoil is not bad, it's surprisingly accurate once you learn the new tube "cheeking" method. It's my favorite gun now, my old favorite was my Ruger SRH .454 but it's too dang expensive to shoot!
DROS'ing a previously registered pistol lower on a PPT is legal, I'm sure that's what he meant. Last edited by Falstaff; 12-20-2010 at 10:43 PM.. |

I went with 10.5 on my AR pistol (First AR15). It seemed like a good middle ground between an AR pistol and Rifle length. I wouldn't mind getting a 7in but that would be a 9MM. |

actually, I'm confused about the laws. Please forgive me. There are soooo many nuances with Ca law that it really takes A LOT of research to stay on top of the game. I am a noob to the AR pistol. I thought you could get a normal lower and register it as a pistol. Apparently I'm wrong. How do I get a lower to make one? maybe this is the nail in the "Talk me out of" coffin I was looking for.

If you're not Roster-exempt, you may purchase a previously-registered pistol lower via PPT (as PPT makes the transaction Roster-exempt), or you can buy a single-shot AR pistol and convert it to semi-auto when it goes home.

Yes! I also believe that one can't DROS an AR lower into a pistol to begin with???

After that, you either have to be a roster-exempt person to purchase one as just the lower, or you have to purchase it with the firearm itself in a roster-exempt configuration. After that it's a simple matter of avoiding the AW laws. For AR pistols, i'm a fan of the piston systems that don't have buffer tubes, they just make the thing seem much more usable.

Without the butt stock your ability to shoot accurately will disappear. Kinda like a pistol grip only shotgun. Fun for a few times, but shooting it gets boring very fast. I think most people regret buying theirs after the honeymoon is over.

^^^ True... I wanted a AR pistol really bad and I shot a buddies a couple hundred times and well to cut it short I didn't end up buying one. If I did it would be in the longest possible configuration I could get so I could somewhat shoulder fire the thing. To me it was like adding a body kit on a pistol just a bunch of unnecessary weight that made it not handle well and only looked good.

I will only talk you out of one to the extent that you find one that I want to buy...
You can only get a stripped pistol lower in the following ways: 1. If you are a LEO (everyone is created equal, but LEO's are more equal than us when it comes to firearms). 2. It is a PPT from someone who already had a pistol lower DROS'ed as such. 3. You are a new California resident and you brought it in with you when you moved here. 4. You build one yourself from an 80% lower. Otherwise, it must be a complete pistol configuration and built up for single shot exemption in order to have it shipped into CA and get it DROS'ed. You can then convert it back to semi but it must have a bullet button and a mag that holds not greater than 10 rds to keep you clear of AW laws (same is true if you build it yourself).

Muzzle blast is definitely there. If you use a compensator you better wear earplugs and earmuffs. With the overall size/length/weight you may as well carry a 16" rifle equivalent and it will give you more control when shooting. The shorter barrel robs muzzle velocity. Don't do it.
Did it work? Honestly, if it doesn't break the bank then go for it.

Get an FN Five-seveN instead. It will satisfy the urge to shoot high velocity centerfire, the ammo is less expensive and when you are bored you can sell it for just about what you paid.

It's ultimately up to you, and your preference is your preference . If you like shooting ar pistols , then go for it, otherwise if you wanted a detracting statement from me, it' would just be cost and probably get another gun that's more fun!

Build it in a pistol caliber. Even an 11 inch barrel can't generate enough velocity to get the needed velocity out of the 5.56 round for reliable fragmentation (it's primary wounding mechanism). Worse, the powder hasn't all burned before the round leaves the barrel, so the flash is ridiculous.
I was looking at building or buying a 7" AR pistol in .40 or 9mm. Instead of crippling a round, it would be maximizing it. RRA has some beauties.

Before you buy the AR pistol, go find a decent holster for it. Sucks getting a nice pistol and not having a good holster.

If you want something that is fun to shoot, you can get one of the Masterpiece Arms Mac-10's they are again sold as a single shot but often times come with magazines that you can than do the simple mod when you get home. Plus since it has a compensator and no other AW features you do not need a bullet button or radlock on it, and can simply once its converted to semi-auto push the button and drop the magazine unlike you AR or AK style pistol.

DAS (Direct Action Solutions) in Solana Beach has two in stock both in 9mm, but he can order them also in .45 ACP. They have two different sizes as well and will run right about 499, the two he has in stock however are 449.
