Thanksgiving weekend report:
We got up there mid-afternoon on Friday; Robb, Jen and ‘Big Greg’ were already there burning in the new wood stove. The installer said to keep the windows open for the first three uses to let out the paint/enamel fumes... 01.jpg So, while we were following that seemingly important advice, we made another fire outside… 02.jpg Then, using Thanksgiving leftovers, we made Turkey Tetrazzini and had peach pie (with one leftover piece of apple/cranberry pie stuffed in there)… 03.jpg We didn’t make much progress on the lighting on Friday. We wired the cabin for nine fixtures and two USB outlets but, in the rush to get the cabin waterproof in time for winter, didn’t label any of the wires so we had to figure out what was what before we could really get going. We couldn’t get the fixture in the living room working so we gave up for the day and lit some oil lamps… 04.jpg We woke up Saturday morning and checked out the handiwork of the stove installer. Suddenly I began to understand why this whole setup was so expensive… 05.jpg

They did some really nice work inside and out…
06.jpg Then we got back on the lighting… 07.jpg Robb had forgotten that one of the USB outlets was now hidden behind a cabinet in the living room so that’s why we had no power up to the living room light. Once that was solved, the living room light came to life. I must say, after all this time, it feels weird just flipping a switch and having light... 08.jpg Next up was the light over the wood stove. This time, we had a box in the wall with no wires sticking out of it. Hmm. We pried the box off the stud, dropped it down in the wall and located the wires after poking around. I guess the wires just got pulled out of the box while we were messing with all this? Got that light working and now Robb just has to buy a press-in box and mount a switch… 09.jpg Earlier on in the day, we started smoking some dead pig. Not early enough though; we had to cut it into two 4lb pieces to make sure it was ready in time... 10.jpg

Then we got about of inch of snow in real quick order. It was beautiful but surprising…
11.jpg 12.jpg These aren't B&W photos. The GF thought I got fancy with the pics. It just looked this way with the lighting and enormous snow flakes. 13.jpg But, I had a big problem. I recently installed 200 watts of solar on the roof of my van which weighs about 65lbs. It already made the pop-top harder to raise but, apparently, when you add one inch of very wet snow followed by some rain, the pop-top will just slam down on it’s own. Robb and I barely got it raised back up before cutting some 2x4’s to support it for the night. The GF was nervous but we lived through the night sleeping upstairs. Just need to adjust the spring mechanism. If you live in the Bay Area and can loan me a come-a-long, please PM me! 14.jpg On Saturday, we also got the stairwell lights up and running. These were pretty simple compared to the first two… 15.jpg

17.jpg Then we rested and stared at the expensive wood stove… 18.jpg And ate that pork… 19.jpg We woke up this morning and checked the firewood damage. We burned about this much… 20.jpg

The weather was much more pleasant but still quite cold…
21.jpg Still had some snow on the ground… 22.jpg Robb and Big Greg got to work on transferring wood from the storage area to the front porch… 23.jpg And Gladys and I got to work on batoning some kindling. I love my Ontario RTAK II! 24.jpg Big Greg splitting some rounds to fill the storage area back up… 25.jpg

Then Robb and Big Greg continued chopping up more wood that was laying around while I screwed off and took pictures …
26.jpg Now the front porch area and main storage are full of wood again, ready for the next adventure… 27.jpg 28.jpg

And lastly, a quick video of yesterday's snow. The sound you hear is just the snowflakes landing on top of the EZ-up. They were YUGE! Yuge, YUGE, trust me!

The porch roof and framing will remain as they are, but that won't be a permanent wood storage area. All those wood storage structures you see are just for this Winter. This Spring we'll build the 10'x20' outdoor kitchen where the picnic table is now and build new, proper wood storage facilities. The 'ready to burn' wood area will probably be on the side of the cabin where the wood stove chimney is. Then we'll build more permanent storage areas up the driveway once we figure out the exact dimensions and placement of the outdoor kitchen. The only thing that's almost finalized is the inside of the cabin. So much more work to do

Robb and Jen are up there tonight cooking chili on the wood stove. He says no snow, but it's below freezing.

Robb and Jen are up there now checking on the property following the big storm.
Creek comparison videos: December 17/18: Yesterday/today: Looking at the bank, it was easily a foot higher right after the last storm.

Haha, he did not! He thought he could make it through because he had already made it through a few sections like that earlier. This one little run was a logging area so that probably didn't help.
He probably wished he had them there! His BFG All Terrains are pretty worn right now. I texted him and let him know that Tire Rack has our size KO2's on sale for $193 each right now. He said Mud Terrains would be too loud, until I reminded him that you already can't hear anything over his 7.3L haha. He's thinking about going from 33's to 35's but he might have to re-gear both diffs. With only a lifted 2WD van, I won't be headed up any time soon. We might not get started on the outdoor kitchen construction until late

Been following this thread since it started originally. Place looks great! Just got a cabin up in El Dorado county myself. It's a fun project.

Probably. Robb has been talking about buying a handgun; I'm trying to help him become a gun owner for the first time. He's shot with me but never owned. If it was my land, Calguns would have helped build it Then again, I wouldn't buy land I couldn't shoot on.
IMG_5181.jpg IMG_5182.jpg Good for you! I hope your cabin is in better shape than this one was. Scary amount of work and $$$. Good to have a bug out location though. Congrats!

Not too long ago, I went back and looked at the pics from the beginning. Talk about things not going how you thought they would! Future cabin buyers beware. Buy an RV or a boat, but if you want a real pain in the ***, buy a cabin in the woods. Geez. We're exactly 1-1/2 years (plus three days) in to this project and we just got lighting done Thanksgiving weekend
In my next life, I'm gonna find a different best friend of 20 years who's cabin and property are already finished! Question: anyone here have experience with off grid gray water leach fields? As the ground begins to soften, it's time to start thinking seriously about digging the pit below where the 10x20 outdoor kitchen/porch area will be. Google brings up a thousand ideas, different PVC distribution setups, etc.
