You'll have to provide a lot more info than that. What model Finn? What arsenal? Condition? Features? Refurbished? As issued? Matching?

I'm selling a pristine 1940 Finn M91 Mosin for $425, a comparable pristine M39 or M28/30 would go for more than that.

Hmmm, someone is having a field day with you. UPS 12 pounds ground to Portland Maine from the peoples republik of CA is less than $20. Thems some pretty steep handling charges.

Insured? I have shipped quite a few long guns.....all in hard cases, insured via UPS Ground. Very few of them even dipped down into the high $30s.

Yes more info is needed.

Only Finnish M/24 SIG, M/39 Sky, or M/28-30 would be worth $500 or more right now amongst the common Finns unless the condition is fantastic.

I been shipping guns every week for 10+ years. Haven't lost or damaged one yet. If the recipient wants insurance, no problem. But really not necessary. Where UPS lays us away is any package over 48" in length or residential deliveries. Residence add maybe 4 or 5 bucks. Over 48" tack on 15.
Hard cases are nice, but usually run over 48". You can get the same protection by wrapping some 1" x 2" furring strip wood to the sides of the rifle with shipping "saran wrap" nice and tight. 8' of 1" x 2" is .97 at Home Depot, weighs less then 2 lbs. Of course wrap the thing with bubble wrap or foam sheet first, then strap the wood to it. Put it in a good strong box, lots of stuffing like newspaper to keep it from rattling around inside the box, and Bobs your uncle.

As further research, I'd really suggest Ian "Gun Jesus" McCollum's site Forgotten Weapons. Sure, he digs into a lotta stuff that we can't buy in CA, but there's a huge amount of date and detail there. He's a true historian. (His side project InRangeTV is great as well, and also covers modern arms.) And not only does Ian collect, but he actually shoots and competes with milsurps, so you can get a much better idea of how these weapons were used.
