It's fish in a barrel. Shouldn't you come home with meat rut or not? Different island. I know!

any fishing plans?

Cool.

Private land for the deer. Would love to hear some of the logistics as it is something I want to do. Wife and son want to go to a comedy show and other son and I want to go get dinner.

State hunt isn't fish in a barrel, private land pretty much is!

But it sure is a good damned time to go shoot deer in Hawaii!

I need to sit down and write up our trip last month to Lana'i to do the public land state hunt. Success there was 18% for archery and around 34% for rifle, and we came home with one deer each (we had three tags each). The deer on that island are most definitely afraid of people. Several small groups spotted us and spooked at 800 yards.

Hella fun, and I'm definitely doing it again, as often as possible!

Ya, I booked on private land. I was mistaken on the island my daughter worked on. She was on Molokai working on cattle. She said the deer werenít to afraid of humans and constantly blocked roads.

She said the meat is amazing and encouraged me to take a doe for more meat.
Weíre flying first class so Iím not going to be on the hook for flying the meat home since thereís no charge.

We were going over anyway so I made a phone call and booked it. I donít even need to bring a rifle. IT BEATS SITTING ON THE BEACH

Spyder, did you take your buck to a local taxidermist or bring it back?

Nah, we did doe tags. The 2019 state hunt was all does. I definitely want a buck to bring back, and if next year state hunt is all doe again I'll likely do it for meat, and pay a private ranch for a buck.

A few years back there was an article in one of the newspapers or magazines about a professional hunter on Molokai who harvested deer that was then sold to restaurants all over Hawaii. Unfortunately I can't find it.

Axis deer and slipper lobster, perhaps the most epic surf and turf.

For the folks that want an actual challenge instead of fish in a barrel...

I added some info on my state hunt DIY trip earlier this year:
