Default Hawke Optics Vantage 3-9x40mm 30/30 Duplex Scope

Are these any good? I pick one up at riflegear, but havne't tried it out yet.

Going to mount it on my 556 and a 308.

What got my attention is "All Caliber Rated" or does this mean on for airguns since Hawke bread and butter are that.

I love the "I just bought it, is it any good?" posts.

I suspect you will be disappointed with it given the application you stated. That being said, it looks like you got a good price and feel free to share your experiences with it when you do use it.

The other Hawke scope thread mentioned here shows just about what I'd expect in $60 glass...poor light transmission when magnification is increased, as in just when you need it. Cheap Chinese glass, construction, and QA.

I'm not sure what you expected for $60.

What else did you expect the manufacturer to tell you?

I have a $30 Barska, it handle a 556 after 300 rounds well. $60 sound like a good deal. I don't want to buy on hype.

It like saying Mercedes a great expensive car. However Toyota outlast a Mercedes 3 times its endurance.

speaking of China. All computer parts are China, Tawian, Phillipine, Indonesia etc made. If you are using a DELL, Gateway, mac. MADE IN CHINA. I wish they were AMERICA though.

Funny that you say you don't want to buy on hype, but their "All Caliber Rated" is exactly that. Of course it works on all calibers, any simple duplex reticle will work on all calibers. It's like saying "new soap bar, now works in water!"

Or to continue with your car analogy, yes there are $50k cars and there are some $20k cars which mostly get the same job done, but you also know there is a lower limit of quality. When you get to a $5k new car, there is just no practical way to get anywhere near the same level of quality.

That's what a $60 scope is. There are many great $1000 scopes, and there are some $500 scopes which can mostly match them, and even into the $250 range there can be good values to be found. But a $60 scope is just disposable.

I'm not an optics snob, I have a $75 Bug Buster that I toss around, but I'm also realistic about it's abilities and limitations. If it loses zero or the reticle comes loose, I would not be surprised at all. And I definitely know that the optics are noticably blurrier at higher magnifications than higher quality scopes.

Air guns are actually harsher on scopes than real firearms due to the bidirectional forces. It's not the area under the curve that breaks scopes, but sudden impulse changes.

https://bearingarms.com/trent-m/2013...for-an-airgun/

So, the Hawke is actually "tougher" than real steel scopes that don't have double seals. That doesn't speak to anything about the optics clarity or tracking etc.

I mean hype as in; a friend got a vortex and spend couple hundreds on it. Say he wont buy anything cheap becuase another friend recomend getting a more expensive one. And i am like why. If i csn hit a target with a $50 scope why pay more. Is it becuase it feel good to say it exspensive?

All rated caliber, i was concern if it was for a air or powder rifle. I got it becuase it was a deal. But dont know how it handle yet. I would pay about the same off amazon for an unname brand. I figure i try hawke since it has some sort of name.

Powder use gas pressure. Spring slam pressure. I kinda see how it works. Excellent article to read.

I love my Bug Buster. It will focus down to 3 feet! It's not a Vortex but it was cheap and it works just fine. I only wish the reticle lines were thinner as the glass is pretty good for Chi-com.

I believe the whole break barrel airgun destroys scopes phenomenon is dependent on the use of typical bottom shelf and Chinese made optics. The notion that your $800 scope would rattle apart with a couple hundred rounds of pellets as stated in the article is BS. The vast majority of airguns scopes are made in China, even the ones used in the UK where airguns are much more prevalent due to firearms restrictions. I googled the concept just now to see if I could find any record, articles, or forums about peoples scopes coming apart. This lists are all your typical Leaper/UTG and the like. Most name brand scopes are not vibration tested in one direction and just waiting to fall apart in the other.

To the OP; if you're used to a $30 scope then pretty much any scope will be an upgrade.

For the rest of us, we wouldn't even bother with a Vortex scope or Leupold, etc. For instance, I run Nightforce on several rifles and there's reason for it. Until you get behind some high-end glass, you'll always tell yourself "why bother".
