Local applicants seeking a permit to carry a concealed weapon now only have to say that they need one for self-defense or personal safety. A federal court decision paved the way for the loosening of rules for granting permits.
WhooHoo! Now to convince San mateo to do the same thing...

Wow, Hell has officially frozen over. Great news, happy for all of you OCers. Hopefully this spreads across the State, the enlightened Sheriff of OC sees the writing on the wall.

This is so surreal. I'd have to agree: Hell has frozen over. But then, knowing how things go in Cali, how long will it really last?

So the dominoes begin to fall. I wonder if Gore sees other county sheriffs capitulating to the Peruta decision if he will rethink his appeal......

A word of warning, the article did say that if Peruta is shot down, they WILL be "re-evaluating" those permits issued under the current holding. You could go through all that effort and expense only to have the permit yanked. I am personally waiting for the decision to be final before I spend the time and effort to get the LTC only to have it "re-evaluated".

When will we break down the Moral Character Clause? I can see them approving for self defense now but denying for petty crimes and tickets.

Get in line and get an appointment anyways - they are all the way in May now. If the case fails you can always just not show up.

$195 every two years. No guarantee you keep it if courts reverse the ruling.

Think I'll wait it out a bit.

This can't be real. What's the catch?

Can someone apply and let us know how it goes?

Read a couple posts up for the catch.

If SD requests en banc, and the panel goes the other way, or petitions SCOTUS...you may need to "supplement the “good cause” statement for the CCW License in accord with Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Policy 218"

I'm going to get an appointment because they're into May as it stands for interviews.

My appt to submit was last Thurs 2/13 @11:30am. I submitted & came back to the office to find out about the Peruta ruling! Hoping that will get my CCW app processed & approved even though I did include a good cause statement (not self defense). Hope this makes my chances even better!

I did hear that the appts to submit the app is now after 05/06/14.

The "catch" is simple. Capricious denials on the subjective basis of "Moral Character". Look cross eyed at your kids, 'bad moral character'. Get 2 parking tickets 'bad moral character', have a snotty ex-spouse who can claim some BS? 'bad moral character'. Had a beer too many and walked home? 'bad moral character'. Did you vote against the SO's political party? 'bad moral character'.

I would think those permits that are issued during this open window would remain valid, even if Perulta gets shot down. It would be some seriously bad press if they issued a bunch of permits and decided to yank them later just because the court no longer says they must issue if someone wanted one for self defense. It would still be the sheriff's call in the end if they wanted to let you keep it or not. I could however see them stopping the issuance though if the case gets reversed. If I lived in OC, I would be jumping in on this window of opportunity. Get in now while the window is open as it may not stay open forever.

Like someone else mentioned, if they did decide to cancel your permit after issuing it and did not give you a refund, they would be facing a major class action that I'm sure they wouldn't want to deal with.

Go get yer permits!

Orange county has always been more conservative so it and San Diego and Riverside and San Bernardino counties would be the most likely counties to change policy first. Los Angeles and San Francisco forget it they will fight tooth and nail to the bitter end before granting ccw for strictly self defense.

I can't express how overly elated I am, but there is a cruel, cruel irony here for me personally. I have been fighting hard for years for the right to carry a concealed weapon for self defense. The counties where I lived in Iowa never exercised discretion to issue while I lived there. A couple of years after I left, Iowa passed a "shall-issue" law. I missed the boat there. Today, I don't have the eyesight to qualify for the shooting proficiency test. Under normal circumstances, I guarantee that I'd be the first person in line to get my permit. I guess I can hope that by May, I'll be in a better spot with my eyes.

$195 is only for first two years. When renewal price drop to $78, and you don't need to pay background check again, they keep that active. Beside, they don't charge the up-front.

The other day I wrote that we should all pressure our boards of supervisors. Some dismissed that as a waste of time.

If the BOS tells the sheriff "no money to defend anti-civil-rights actions", the sheriff apparently will listen. No, the sheriff does not work for the BOS, but
the sheriff does need the BOS to pay for her defense.

This is another case of follow-the-money.
