Default Active duty getting out and returning to CA

Hello, I'm curious about an active duty member who was originally a CA resident, but was able to purchase guns in another state that they were permanently stationed. What would the process be if that person were getting out of the military (honorably) and returning back to CA? Do they just return with the guns as long as they are CA legal and send in the DOJ registration forms for the appropriate types or do you have to go through a CA FFL?

Thank you

As long as it isn't an "assault weapon" it is fine to bring back and register with the form and $19 or whatever it is. No threaded barrels.

Or don't register them.

I'm not sure why you would voluntarily return to this state...

In addition to the above postings, also you cannot bring in any large-capacity magazines unless you lawfully possessed them in California prior to 1-1-2000.

You cannot bring in a Taurus "Judge" or similar weapon, and no .50 BMG rifles.

Threaded barrels are OK on revolvers and rifles, but not on semi-auto pistols.

The responses have already answered your question, so I'm just here to say welcome. I got out four months ago after being stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and returned home to CA. The gun laws here suck donkey cack, but damn near everything else is better. Most people who question others as to why the come back to CA have never left the state.

I question why I came back here every day. Now I'm saving money to escape.

I just got out too. Gun laws here suck but the scenery is awesome. I'm still debating. I might just leave the country altogether. Not sure if I like the direction in which we are headed. Still a toss-up.

Serious advice: If you don't already have a very good job opportunity lined up, don't move back to this state. If you have family you can visit them. The economy sucks and gun laws suck even worse. Don't bother.

I got out in 09 when the economy tanked, Luckily I was accepted into nursing school under veteran preference and used my Post 911 GI Bill. The BAH is really what gets you by. Now Im going for my Bachelors and qualified for VocRehab.

Use your VA benefits and get your degree if you don't already have one

Don't come back and wait until your Unemployment Bennies run out before looking for a direction (like my wife's son, who knocked up a Phillipina while stationed in S. Korea). He waited a year to get serious, burned up his GI Bennies on things he wasn't suited for. Now he's delivering flyers to front doors and looking to work at Circle K for minimum wages. He was recently introduced to the "Alternative Media" and is shocked about the real state of the economy (his previous main interests were video games and pro-sports on the dish). Wishes he never got out ....

Hey for those who got out and had the Navy/Army/Marines/Air Force move you; is the DOD obligated to pay the PCS costs to move you back to your Home of Record? I know they don't pay DLA...but they at least cover the costs back right? What if your HOR no longer exists (house was demolished)? Do they just cover the mileage from your last duty station to where your HOR used to be and you have the pay the distance if you want to move further away? I'm probably getting out here, HOR is Colorado and thinking of going to Florida.

They'll cover costs up to the same mileage as your HOR. So you could go the complete opposite direction if you felt like it.

Welcome home! I retired (army), here 2004. The weapons laws are not the best, but there seems there is a legal way around most of them. Pistols are registered with the CADOJ, forms on websight. For semi auto rifles use the ca guns flow chart. Where in California are you planning to settle down in?
