Add Remchoke to existing 20 inch 870 marine mag?
My 870 Marine Mag has a zinc coating on the barrel. Can I tap/mod the barrel to accommodate Remchoke inserts or do I need to find a replacement barrel to yield thighter patterns with shot loads at greater distances? And how costly would it be to have a new barrel zinc coated to match the rest of the shotgun?

You may want to check with Briley to install the chokes into your existing barrel.
http://www.briley.com/c-1106-12-gaug...tallation.aspx Or buy a remington barrel with rifle sights and a remchoke and re-plate it in nickel (or) cerakote, or spray paint it silver. The plating on the barrel is nickel and not zinc. Best regards, 870classic. Last edited by 870classic; 05-24-2018 at 10:27 AM.. |

adding chokes is an expensive process...
Most simply buy another barrel for the purpose.... Short- 18-20" for the home Longer, easier on the ear balls, when you shoot a 3 or 3 1/2" without hearing protection while hunting to have a 28" barrel. chokes are funny- almost magical constriction... With a fixed choke, you might need to remove the constriction as it is 2-5" back from the muzzle... so you get to sand down the constriction.... then thread the end for screw in chokes... - for OO fighting guns, van comp does a full back bore- from the forcing cone to the muzzle.... reduces recoil impulse due to the change in the forcing cone.... Ports on the Vang, allow the gun to "Fart". By venting gas out of a comp holes, the shot cup is disturbed less by gasses passing the wad and shot cup just outside of the muzzle.... this gives more consistent patterns -- If you can tell us more about your set up, we might be able to better offer suggestions. advice. guidance. -- When I hear 3"- 3 1/2" I think of hunting- extended ranges with a shotgun... Does this make some sense?

Chokes work on any length barrel, the effectiveness has nothing to do with barrel length, it is all about barrel ID versus choke ID.
Like mentioned above,, Send the barrel to Briley as they do this work everyday and your barrel will come back done right. Randy

I use my 20” on turkey, coyotes and HD all with different chokes. And yes, a choke on a HD gun is a great idea. If I can hit a moving clay at 75’ I sure as hell don’t need a soccer ball sized pattern at 30’ to hit a man sized target. I want every pellet in the tightest pattern possible for safety and efficiency. Last edited by deckhandmike; 05-29-2018 at 10:25 AM.. |

Agreed, I just said a 20" barrel is pretty useless. And I wouldn't waste my money having chokes put in it.

Choke tube install
I had Carlson's do my HD shotgun barrel and an old fixed Winmaster barrel. For around $135 they thread it and give you 3 chokes. You can do just about any type you want (remchoke, invector ect)
I am very happy with their service. I did my 870s with the invector plus style. Mainly because my winchester already uses them and I did not want another style. http://www.choketube.com/choke-tube-installation-R.php Brett

wonder why, if you agree it has no negative effect on accuracy nor pattern why not to use it for hunting? After selling my 28" for a couple of years already i use 24" for hunting with great success,
Now i also wanted to do so to my 18" to get rid of additional barrels, but now i'm concerned, could you please elaborate why it is "useless". Why 28 is usable and 20 is not ... Last edited by RandyCat; 05-29-2018 at 12:27 PM.. |

I will tell you that chokes are a real pain in the neck, they can become loose and adds extra steps to your cleaning routine.
As an alternative, you might want to get another barrel with a fixed full choke and save yourself the hassle. That's what I did when I ordered my new shotgun, it is an O/U with 2 barrels; a O/U and a unsingle barrel, both have fixed chokes on them. |

If you want to shoot animals that fly get another barrel, 870 barrels are not expensive. Yes there are internet warriors that tear it up on the skeet field with tactical shotguns and the Taurus Judge, and also nail geese with them at 70 yards. I have never seen it in person though. What about you ysr? Seen anyone shoot a perfect score at Sporting Clays with a 20” barrel?

If it flies 24”+ is best. Anything on land a 20” with chokes is ideal, from coyotes, pigs, turkeys to home intruders. You are not a tactical ninja for wanting a tight group. The whole point of shotguns is versatility. Chokes aren’t a pain to deal with, almost never come loose and take only a few seconds to clean every few months. Don’t believe the hate. A lot of outdated info in this thread.

...to continue this cordial discussion,.... yes I do change the choke. Turkeys get the extra full heavy shot . Coyotes get the improved mod with #4 buck . Pigs get the modified for 000 buck or rifled slugs. Oh in case he is using the Maine magnum on a boat ... it a modified choke and slugs or3" steel bbs for sharks in the seine net Last edited by yoteassasin; 05-30-2018 at 8:23 PM.. You can just admit you are ignorant when it comes to multiple disciplines of using a shotgun. There is a lot of shotgunning outside of sporting clays.

I leaned that just because I can beat a nail in with a shoe, that doesn't make it the best tool for the job.
Funny, 99% of all hunting and target shooting shotguns AREN'T 20". I wonder why? |

Don't know if I heard this somewhere or what, but it holds true
A good bird hunter will shoot pretty good on a clays range A good clays shooter will shoot pretty good on a Tac range I've never seen it work in reverse |
