Default Good backpacking spots?

Looking to go backpacking soon. What are some good spots? Willing to drive up to 8 hours. I live in SLO.
  • On a river is ideal so we can fish.
  • Not looking for a long hike, ~2-8 miles.
  • Secluded is ideal. Nobody around for a few miles is great
  • Trying to spend 2-3 nights out.

I've been backpacking before on the San Joaquin River but I'm not sure exactly where we were.

I used to do Hope Valley up in the Tahoe Basin allot. Beautiful, quiet and very scenic. But that was ten years ago so may be different, but I doubt it. Very secluded.

We backpacked in, fished some Alpine lakes for trout had a fresh fish dinner and then since the weather was perfect threw our sleeping bags in an open meadow of wild flowers and slept right there.

Dinkey Lakes Wilderness offers lots of options. My favorite spot is Cliff Lake which can be accessed from the north or south. I like the southern approach because the trailhead is right at Courtright Reservoir and the road is paved all the way. About 5 miles in with some elevation gain.

Rock Creek Canyon / Little Lakes Valley? Probably won't pass your seclusion criteria this time if year tho.

Barker Valley on Palomar is cool. But the closest fishing I’m aware of is henshaw.

Pinion flat is nice too. Has a seasonal stream, but I doubt any fish.

South Fork of the San Joaquin River at Florence Lake... excellent trout fishing. Devil's Bathtub above Lake Edison... not very technical, but a nice hike & very nice camping by the lake. Dinky Lakes Wilderness is really nice, too.

Why drive so far? There are quite good backpacking (and car camping) possibilities in the Big Sur area. For example... consider hiking to Vincente Flat, off Highway 1, or come in from above, off Forest Service road 22S05 (two two Ess zero five)
