Anyone Use Hughesnet?
Moving to Texas next week. My only reliable internet option at this point is Hughesnet. I'm trying to figure out a way to record programs on Nexflix, etc, in the off hours so I won't take a hit on my usage.
My TV's are all smart so I'm thinking of hooking up a Tivo or other recorder to either the TV or wifi. It's either that or add a basic Directv packege and download PPV's. Anything else I might consider?

From what I have read, caps make hughesnet unusable for streaming, especially HD. Just read that no caps exist for gen5, but... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mxK4PEQ7zwI# |

If there is a Northland Cable in your part of Texas, use that. No data cap, and it's reliable. Basic package is ok for around $45. The high end internet service is $75/MO. However, it's very good. This is what I use.
Hughesnet sux turkey testes. Not only that, you have to sign a two year plan that you won't like. I despise data caps. Last edited by Dragunov; 05-22-2018 at 2:15 PM.. |

My house is in the middle of nowhere, so I'm stuck having to go satellite for any and all tv/internet services.
I had Exede, which is a direct competitor to Hughesnet, and will say that internet wasn't as enjoyable once you hit your data cap. The service itself remained consistent in terms of speed and service, but it was expensive for what it was and once you hit your 'cap', your service was severely throttled down. This would make streaming non-existent. For the last year and a half I switched to a small, private company that has a 'tower' miles from where I live. They install a small dish, so the data goes from said-tower to my house via cell phone waves. It's a much shorter distance so my latency dropped dramatically vs satellite, the service is unlimited, and it's as fast as my cable was when I used to live in the city. For that, I'll gladly keep paying the +$100/mo I currently do, and love it. I suggest you look to see if such a service exists where you'll end up living. Btw, internet should be the least of your concerns. In a free state, you should be out buying and shooting all the cool guns us Californians only dream of. Hell, I would never be home if I were you.

I know that a lot of people in rural areas around Temecula use "microwave"(?) Internet service around places where there are hills, but if you are going to a place w/out hills this might be an issue. I don't know the true reliability, but we had one of these services at work as a backup which wasn't reliable (new company at the time with a new tech.), and an acquaintance had it in Aguanga (or was it Sage?) and his was out the only time I went to his house, but that might have been his router, however I had no time to check...

Where satellite might work is in late-night backup. But your typical backup solutions for the net do not have any control for variable rate and capacity of the network service. We have very slow networking at home and I do analysis using the Chrome developer tab. By byte count, for interactive browsing, 99.98% of the content is useless crap (ads). Noise to signal ration is 5000:1. You cannot use satellite for this sort of use case.

I do. It sucks, but it is the only option I have. It's slow, their customer service is almost entirely worthless, and it occasionally goes down and I have to just shut down and wait it out.
I also don't TV. So, no netflix or streaming tivo or any of that other crap. Mine certainly is not fast enough for anything streaming, at an average of 0.6Mbps download speed back when I checked regularly. I still do old school Netflix DVD delivery occasionally, but that's it. Last edited by Spyder; 05-23-2018 at 4:23 PM.. |

Satellite internet is the worst. I'd rather have my toenails pulled out with pliers than live with satellite internet. And I too would take a cellular hotspot over sat internet every day. Ain't nobody got time for it.

I talked with Verizon, my current carrier, and they recommended against using a hot spot for primary internet as even though I have an unlimited plus plan, they severely throttle after twenty or so gigs.
I may wind up also getting a direct tv dish for local and a few other channels. I'm retiring anyway so I don't need the capability to log into a work computer anymore

I used to have Hughesnet a long time ago when I lived in the wilderness. It was slightly better than smoke signals, but not by much.

Wow! You people are spoiled.
I've had to use sat Internet for years. Wildblue>Excede>ViaSat after all of the musical chair corporate name changes occured. Good reliable service IME. My cell service can be sketchy at times too, so... Sent using a long string and 2 Dixie cups

Had HughesNet on one of our vehicles for work and hated it. Ran into the FAP (fair access policy) or what they call their cap and to try to work around it with them was a nightmare.
Moved over to another vendor that primary supports the oil industry and couldn’t be happier. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Probably not best to use the words "porn" & "fap" in the same post. Jk Seriously tho, swapping big fat files will be dropped down from giddy up to trot and finally a slow walk. The residential flavor has less data than a business package, but you can buy more data easy enough. For those heavy flow days. Sure beats stone age pots lines and a 56k modems. You may be able to set up a short range point to point wireless solution, look at the surrounding area and see if a neighbor, business complex, etc. has fiber or other form of quality internet that they'd be willing to split with you.
May require a mast and antenna on one or both ends. Ultimately, a better solution that satellite. With the right equipment and surveying, these point to point wireless solutions can go miles. I used to work for an ISP that used these wireless backhauls to deliver internet to business parks that were within eyeshot of our datacenters. Worked great. |
