Default SF Bay Area Range Suggestions?

The thrill of getting muzzle-swept by people in the lane next to me, or sometimes way the hell at the other end of the range, has worn out. I'm in SF, and shoot at Chabot, San Leandro, Bullseye, and Jackson, and all have provided a few too many thrills. Does anyone know of a private range in the area, or at least one that has strict ROs?

Check out the new Bay Area Chapter, inside the NorCal forum. They have a great list of Bay Area Ranges.

This is kind of nuts but I go to oroville shooting range. It's a proper redneck range that is out door and not supervised.
I went to Jackson Arms hear in the bay and did not enjoy the people that worked there or well any thing about it.
Oroville is a ways but its a nice drive and when I go I spend the day and bring fun stuff to blow up.

I've seen some of that at the indoor ranges where you have gun rentals and first time shooters, or groups with newbies at busy times, and folks not paying attention especially on reloads. Off-hours some of those same places you have to yourself though.

I'm surprised though about Chabot on your list, normally folks comment about the opposite, ROs "that yell because they care"...

Chabot on your list? That's place usually on top of it. It's my go to range......San leandro seems kinda lax but during the week I've been there and maybe 3-4 people at the whole place.......I think one time I was the only person using the indoor

Go to Livermore if you like getting yelled at for just about anything. They do run a pretty tight ship. Things might be a little toasty up there this weekend though.

In my experience USI consistently has the most closely supervised outdoor range. On the weekends, they'll have 4 - 6 RSOs walking the line (not hiding indoors like at some ranges). They are very nice - but firm. I feel absolutely safe there.

For indoors ranges, I think its all about going during off hours. During busy times there will be lots of newbies, and its a miracle more people aren't hurt.

""Avoid San Leandro, it stinks over there.""

LOL yeah with a dump on one side and sewage plant on the other with right wind yeah it smells outside, inside no. The Sat outside steel shoot can get ripe but gunpowder smell covers anything.

Sunnyvale is nice, I prefer Los Altos though.

We have a legal private range on our ranch in Lake County.
7 to 300 yards with lots of steel targets...

Los Altos is my favorite outdoor range in this area...

+1 for Sunnyvale. Been to Metcalf & Los Altos as well but I prefer Sunnyvale Rod and Gun. Some things that make this place stand out from the rest:

Well maintained (range almost looks perfectly groomed)
Multiple metal targets to shoot at
100 yard lanes that are adjustable in 25 yard increments
Large thick cement walls separating each lane
Optional PVC attachment for the rifle lanes in shielding against flying brass.
fully covered shooting bench (awesome to shoot when its raining out)
super friendly staff (RO's will be seen picking up your ammo casing for you)

and my favorite: Open til 9pm on Tuesdays to the public!

Memeber of USI and I really like it there. Lots of pistol and rifle lanes. Trap, skeet, and sprting clay fields. And action pistol bays are geat too.

I definitely like the fact that you can stay in one lane and adjust the target distances at the Livermore range as well as Sunnyvale Rod and Gun. What is also nice are the walls between lanes at both ranges so you don't have to worry about flying brass coming from your neighbor. At the Livermore range you can also shoot pistols in your same lane. Not sure if you can do that at the Sunnyvale range. Chabot and Los Altos are decent ranges as well. I like the manual trap machines at Los Altos.

I don't think you can switch between rifle and pistol in the same lane.

I forgot to add one more thing about Sunnyvale Rod & Gun:

"No excessive rapid fire allowed", which means the occasional double/ triple taps are allowed and the 3 seconds in between shots does not apply. Another +1 for SVRG!

I really enjoy Sunnyvale rod and gun, but like Los Altos too. Sunnyvale gets pretty packed on the weekends. Los altos is a bit larger, which helps with the crowds. Both seem well run and safe. And the steels at Sunnyvale are a definite plus, along with the variable distance.
