Default Out of state family transfer

I mentioned to my son in Texas that I was interested in acquiring a Walther PPK .380 for my collection. At the time I wasn't aware that Walthers were not on the California "list" (except the .22). He went out and bought one for me and wants to send it to me for my birthday. I know that a transfer could be arranged through FFLs if it was a listed gun. I know that owning a PPK is not illegal. I was wondering, since we are immediate family, can he transfer an unlisted firearm to me?

But short answer: Yes, TX-son can transfer to CA-father.
