I've got the Garcia Bear cache.
It's plenty rugged but I do agree with the observation that the opening is too narrow.

I was reading a few months ago that despite the kevlar bags being very effective, they were having a hard time getting them approved as in a lot of areas, Yosemite was a big one. Realistically you have to be on the Forrest Service's list of approved containers to be commercially viable, because it seems like most hikers only carry bear containers in places where they are required and use the PCT hang method in areas where bear canisters are optional.

I have the BearVault BV500 Canister.
It can be a B1tch to open so I marked the spots with some tape for easy identification. It holds plenty, has a large opening (which is why I bought it), and does make a nice chair though. You can rent the Garcia Bear cache at the visitor center in Lone Pine for $5 if you're backpacking on the East side. Last edited by Cactus_Tim; 03-16-2013 at 6:44 AM.. |

I've used the Garcias and the BearVaults, and I prefer the BearVaults, by far. I'm not sure what most people use them for, but I'm a backpacker and the Garcia has a few considerable drawbacks:
1.) Locking mechanism - The BearVault can be a pain, but it doesn't require tools, which is awesome. Finding a coin, or busting out the screwdriver on your Leatherman to get to your food gets old. 2.) It's opaque - Yea, the Garcia will hold a lot of food, but finding what you want in a deep, dark hole can be pretty difficult. The BearVault really shines here. The opacity is exacerbated by the narrow opening and height of the canister. Stuff gets lost down in there. 3.) Weight - The Garcias are HEAVY. The larger BearVault (BV500) holds considerably more than the Garcia and weighs less. The smaller BearVault (BV450) doesn't hold quite as much, but is A LOT lighter.
